tamoko commented on The Asteroid that Killed the Martian Magnetic Field Weird hypothesis, but it does provide a (very strange) explanation for why Mars' magnetic field stopped. Kind of grasping at straws, but that how a lot of good science starts - with wild and often improbably ideas...

tamoko commented @FY9: Spending too much time in your own ideological "comfort capsule"? This is a symptom of a large, complex problem. Talk radio feel good yabbering does zip for addressing the problem, much less finding realistic solutions.

tamoko commented on Comic-Con Sold Out @TheGreat&PowerfulTurtle: I've been. The atmosphere's a bit different, not quite so hollywood/media saturated, but it's definitely worth going too once.

tamoko commented on Comic-Con Sold Out Last year was great, and I remember having conversations with some event staff about attendance. They had the same reaction on Saturday concerning the total sell out of tickets. The lines and crowds were insane, but only if you didn't think ahead...

@Citizen Kang: Yeah, I totally agree on the freak show aspect. We only went Thursday and Friday for a few hours too. We spent more time cruising around downtown, hanging in the gas-light district, and going to see Richard Cheese and a burlesque show. I love the carnival atmosphere and the the forums, but your right about just getting in, hitting your target vendors and artists, and then bail for the sunlight and some ribs at that rib-shack where they filmed a scene for Top Gun.

tamoko commented on Nerdgasm: Watchmen Trailer Hits Web a Day Early @qbrad: Regardless, read the "comic/graphic novel", it's Alan Moore at his best, and pretty good social/political commentary for the 80's too. It's scope and depth is as good as it gets.

tamoko commented on Nerdgasm: Watchmen Trailer Hits Web a Day Early @Ambiguous Blob 2.0: I have the same concern about Dr. Manhattan, but we can probably overlook it, especially from how the rest of the film looks.

This will definitely be one to wait for a deluxe special edition to be released, kind of like Hell Boy II. There's just too much history involved with this film, and the creative process behind it (sketches, interviews, set designs, etc) will probably give me hours or nerdtastic fun, on top of just watching the film.

tamoko commented on The Earth-Bashers @Log1c: I was thinking that too. Erosion has taken away all the finite features.

This is just sweet, crazy Japanese goodness, and the expressions on the other passangers faces are priceless.

@Waterhouse: Me too, and ride the subways trains for hours looking for worthy challengers...

tamoko commented Interesting design, but I question the comfort factor too.

tamoko commented on A New Explanation for Morgellons, the Disease that Makes Wires Grow Out of Your Skin @I Think We're Property: Exactly... we as a species must just except or fate, and eagerly await the modular reprocessing installations that will be dropped from orbit to commence the "Rebirth". I can't wait for the placental nano-constructors to get to work on my organs...

tamoko commented on The Fembot Doll Kicked Ass in 1977! My god, I actually remember this ad! Crap I feel old.

Fembots always gave me the creeps; that faceplate full of cameras and circuitry embodied robotic terror to me, at least until I saw "The Demon Seed" or the"The Forbin Project" on late night TV. HAL creeped me out too, but I only understood why after I actually read 2001.

tamoko commented on Boeing JHL-40 Heavy-Lift Rotorcraft Is Massive Floating Crane Of course the thing would have to be much larger, and probably have more of a lifting body shape for stability.

tamoko commented on Boeing JHL-40 Heavy-Lift Rotorcraft Is Massive Floating Crane I love the steerable rotors for finite station keeping. Imagine one of these with 20 or 40 shipping containers slung underneath...

tamoko commented on Molly Ringwald Trapped In A Robolympics Of Death As low budget as this flick was, I loved it as a kid. It was on a regular rotation on the USA network for what seemed like years...It still runs on one of the Comcast HD channels from time to time.

Anything with Michael Ironsides as a deranged cyborg can't be bad, at least in retrospect.

tamoko commented on First Teaser Poster From The Day The Earth Stood Still @victheremin: Dead-on. I'd like to see a slew of crappy movies remade with complete rewrites too. I could rattle off a dozen films that had real gems of story telling, plot devices, or character development, but that just plain sucked...

Anyone game for a remake of Brain Damage, or how about Max Headroom?

tamoko commented on When Therapy Goes Bad I love this movie, classic Cronenberg at his best. It freaked me out when I first saw it.

tamoko commented on Now That Plagues Are Played Out, What Should Be Movies' Next Apocalypse? Hmmm... How about the "Big crunch" and the end of the universe. Read a short story by Stephen Baxter about this, rather cool as humanity listens to all the fledgling civilizations squealing goodbye, and the universe contracts towards Earth.

Of course, unless humanity suddenly finds a way to fold space and escape into a bubble universe, there's no opportunity for a sequel.
