Comments from tiemposbuenos Comments from tiemposbuenos tiemposbuenos commented on The Frozen Waterfalls of Mars Actually, I think the first image is more gorgeous. ;)

Though I know Mars has some enormous geological features, looking at the pictures it's hard for me to really grasp the scale.

tiemposbuenos commented on I Love It When A Plan Totally Doesn't Come Together @Charlie Jane Anders: Yes! My requests for more male eye candy are starting to be fulfilled.

tiemposbuenos commented on Twitter Users Worth Following I just tried following leoben, but twitter gives me an error every time. heh. the site issues are a little annoying!

I like twitter much better than sites like facebook or myspace, but I still don't use it that much. If my closest friends used it I'm sure I would frequent it much more.

I'm not sure if anyone else has this problem, but most of my twitter friends are Brazilians. When I update in Portuguese, however, I exclude my few American friends who can't understand anything (most of my Brazilian friends have at least a grasp on English). I'd rather update in Portuguese because the conversation flows better with my Brazilian friends. I tried posting things in English and Portuguese but with only 140 characters that is very limiting!

tiemposbuenos commented on Science Fiction That Could Turn You Queer, If Only for a Nanosecond Cool list. I program for the biggest queer film festival in Latin America and we rarely get scifi narrative stuff (ie not really experimental/bizarre/trashy), which is a shame. A hot gay cylon is totally missing in my life. I understand including Zerophilia in the list, but man, that movie is AWFUL!

tiemposbuenos commented on CookiePie Logs into Multiple Gmail Accounts Simultaneously just installed this now - awesome!

tiemposbuenos commented on Battlestar Galactica Goes Planet of the Apes @Daveinva: I like the idea that the fifth cylon has already died. That would help explain why D'Anna apologized to her/him when she learned all their identities. Plus, it would be more interesting from a dramatic point of view, considering that at this point it feels a bit irrelevant who is cylon and who isn't among the fleet.

tiemposbuenos commented on Battlestar Galactica Goes Planet of the Apes This episode was amazing, so much better than I expected. I thought there would just be drama with the identities of the final four being revealed to the fleet, which is cool but kind of predictable. (I agree that the final cylon is kind of moot at this point.) Getting to Earth so easily completely threw me off and I'm glad this happened now instead of at the very end of the series. Earth is worse than New Caprica AND Caprica! I honestly don't know what to expect for the final episodes as I'm sure the dynamic of the entire show will change. Have Cavil and all the other cylons died? If not, what do you want to bet they're going to find Earth too?

tiemposbuenos commented on Bookshelves for Your Spaceship I live in SP and wow... that's a big apartment!

tiemposbuenos commented on Two Problems and One Solution for Friday's Battlestar Episode I agree. This felt like a filler episode, which is ridiculous considering all the major plot developments that happened. The execution was so off. Personally I think it would have been much more interesting for Zarek to claim the presidency.

tiemposbuenos commented on When Did Battlestar Galactica Jump The Shark? @extracrispy: Nice! Here's another one I just found [www.sandragetsdumped.com] though it's not really fair that there's a half-undressed woman in the same picture.

tiemposbuenos commented on When Did Battlestar Galactica Jump The Shark? @Charlie Jane Anders: No problem, give me a camera and pay me my going freelance rate. I won't let you down!

tiemposbuenos commented on When Did Battlestar Galactica Jump The Shark? In the interest of equality, I think the next arbitrary BSG post should have a picture of Helo in a speedo.

BSG has had some cheesy moments but I would say it hasn't jumped the shark. In fact I'm very relieved that the show will be ending this season so it WON'T have the chance to jump the shark. I was a hardcore Buffy fan back in the day but that show stopped being good IMO in the 5th season.

BSG is by far the best scifi on TV. Unfortunately this week's episode "Sine Qua Non" is so bad it won't help my case...

tiemposbuenos commented on Exclusive: First Details Of Ron Moore's New Show Virtuality @Joscelin: Heh, funny you should say that, as I am currently rereading the Mars trilogy after many years (I'm on Green Mars right now). I'm not sure I see the parallel -- in my mind KSR is much more concerned with landscapes and scientific theories and the characters are secondary.

tiemposbuenos commented on New Battlestar Episode Packed with Plotholes I love BSG but I didn't care for this episode (IMO the worst of the season so far) and I do think the "plotholes" were sloppy writing. Of course, I never liked the Romo Lampkin character to begin with, so the fact that he featurely so heavily here did not make me happy. Lee becoming president has been obvious since the beginning of the frakkin season!!! Talk about anticlimactic.

tiemposbuenos commented on Is the One-Page Resume a Myth or Mandatory? I think your profession is also an important factor. I'm a freelancer working with cultural events and also translation. All of my jobs are temporary and for a freelancer, the more jobs I list, the better. Of course when I'm applying for translation jobs, I don't need to include all my production experience, but when applying for producing a film festival my translation experience is often an advantage. I just worked at a very prestigious film festival and the director told me that they almost never hire someone who is not recommended by someone in the team, and that they made an exception in my case based on the strength of my resume. (She also complimented the layout, which I think is very important.) As a bonus they ended up using me as a simultaneous interpreter for some of their events, which gave me a chance to make some extra money.

tiemposbuenos commented on Exclusive: First Details Of Ron Moore's New Show Virtuality Wow. This sounds fantastic. It's a shame I expect Fox to meddle with all the best elements and cancel it before it has any chance to be daring. I'm really hoping they don't frak this one up.

I'm not sure there's much point in debating how the writers handle the characters until we've actually seen the show!

I'm so glad there will be a gay couple, that is an element sorely missing from BSG's post-apocalyptic society.

tiemposbuenos commented on Cylon Psychodrama and Way Too Much Singing on Battlestar Yes, you meant "MORTAL enemy." I thought Gaeta sang well, but one scene of song was enough for me.

tiemposbuenos commented on What Are You Doing with Your Stimulus Check? "Unless you made a fistful of cash last year, you've got a stimulus check either already in your bank account or on its way."

Neither, as I do not live or work in the US. Assumptions like this are kind of annoying, considering how the internet is international and all...

tiemposbuenos commented on Cylon Deathfest on Battlestar Galactica I thought this was the best BSG in a long, long time - like since early Season 3. I totally lost it in Roslin's scenes, she made me cry like a baby. And the mercy killing of the Six was heartbreaking. Not to mention all the cool plot developments!

tiemposbuenos commented on Lost: Move It or Lose It This is the first ep I've really enjoyed in a long time. I loved the reveal of Claire sitting in Jacob's cabin - count me in the "Claire is dead" camp now. I also loved the brief moment of the Losties watching the helicopter arrive, and seeing them interpret things so wrongly.

That freight ship is a homoerotic paradise! Desmond and Sayid sweaty together in the same room, naked Kevin Durand getting "strapped up" by an officer, the hot captain who was just killed... I need to take a cold shower.

tiemposbuenos commented on Nine Reasons Why I Hate E.T. Funny you should mention the "penis breath" line. I remember watching ET with my mom as a kid and my mom saying to one of the other moms, "that line is so unnecessary" or something like that. Guess my mom would be happy about the new censored version!

tiemposbuenos commented on Battlestar Galactica Prequel Gets Its Crafty Matriarch Yes, I love Deadwood! But I'm still not sure how I feel about this prequel - BSG is wonderful and I'll be sad to see it go, but the premise of Caprica doesn't exactly sound that captivating. With a casting choice like this, though, I feel encouraged.

tiemposbuenos commented on A Giant Bag of "What the Hell" on Battlestar Galactica I liked this episode, though the Ellen-as-6-scenes got a little old.

Tyrol thinks his options were limited, what about the gays of the fleet? There must be like one gay bar with the same five people in it every night. I feel sorry for them!

tiemposbuenos commented on Watch a Cylon Interrogation and the Venture Bros. Preview Sigh. Once again, whoever lives outside of the US can't watch this clip from NBC/SciFi/etc. Do these kinds of geographical viewing limitations really make sense on the internet? (No.)

tiemposbuenos commented on Trapped In A City Of Dead Eyes This was produced by a friend of mine and filmed in São Paulo. I watched a lot of the exterior shots. I'm interested to see how the movie turns out.

tiemposbuenos commented on Meet The People Who Give Eliza Dushku Her Brain Modules @Annalee Newitz: And not all of those male viewers are straight!

Actually, considering how I and every other gay teenager looooooved Buffy back in the day, I'd say a lot of them aren't.

tiemposbuenos commented on Escher-like Games - a Trippy New Movement in Game Design? Looks amazing. But what about gravity? Can the figure not walk on different sides of a surface, depending on the perspective?

tiemposbuenos commented on Handling More Than 12 Hours on a Plane? I go between Brazil and New Zealand at least once a year, and I've travelled a lot in my lifetime. Very important: DRINK AS MUCH WATER AS POSSIBLE. Try to sleep as much as you can (take a sleeping pill if you must). Eat very lightly on the day of travel, as so much time sitting down blocks your stomach/digestion and can make you bloated/constipated. Also, be sure to bring some warm clothes, as it's usually cold on the plane (and cold air makes it harder to go to sleep).

tiemposbuenos commented on How Many of Your Internal Organs Can You Live Without? My boyfriend was born with a recessive gene that made a few of his vital organs decidedly mal-formed... so the long story is that he had a kidney transplant when he was 20 (he's 25 now). He takes a bunch of meds twice a day (a lot of immunosuppressants to keep his body from rejecting the new organ) and I give him injections twice a week to compensate for his permanent anemia, but you wouldn't know by looking at him that he was constantly sick for 20 years of his life! The bad part is that his spleen works overtime and kills way too many red cells. His doctors have talked about removing his spleen for awhile, but since surgery is so risky they figure it's better avoided...

But anyway, what about the spleen? A friend of mine had hers removed when I was college, and she seems like she's doing OK without it!

tiemposbuenos commented on The Shape of Urban Traffic to Come I would include São Paulo in this feature, simply because there are traffic jams EVERYWHERE, day or night. (The highways that run along the two rivers are particularly difficult...) Every car has a designated day of the week that it can't drive, but there are talks of extending that to two days. An unfortunate side effect of the Brazilian economy getting stronger and stronger in recent years is that car sales have skyrocketed. Pretty soon traffic here is expected to reach a critical point where it's just impossible to drive anymore! The city's population exploded in the 20th century, and consequently there was no real infrastructure designed to handle this kind of traffic. (On the flip side, Brasília was completely designed around cars, and has virtually no traffic jams.)

As far as pollution goes, all new cars can run on ethanol (biofuel, which is significantly cheaper than petrol here), so that's a plus.

tiemposbuenos commented on Seven Reasons Why Australia is the Most Apocalyptic Country I lived in Perth (Western Australia) for five years as a teenager, and in my mind Australia already FEELS apocalyptic! That place is not supportive to human settlement... scorching hot temperatures, the most species of deadly snakes and spiders in the world, not a drop of water to be found anywhere... it's a rough place.

tiemposbuenos commented on A Water Bottle for Giant Monsters Showed Up Yesterday in Sao Paulo @georgeguimaraes: Me too! I sent this to some friends who are very involved with recycling initiatives, and this is the first they've heard of it. I'd be curious to find out where exactly this is on the Tietê...

tiemposbuenos commented on Five Ways 9/11 Changed Science Fiction @moerex: I was going to mention Children of Men as well. As far as 9/11-influenced scifi goes, it doesn't get much better than that in my opinion.

tiemposbuenos commented on Toxic Fashion Show Celebrates Pollution Nothing personal, but it was fashion week in São Paulo (which Tietê runs through). Saying it was fashion week in Brazil is kind of misleading, since Rio de Janeiro has a different fashion week, and you know... Brazil's a big and diverse place.

Anyway, definitely appropriate stuff for io9! I work for a film festival in SP, and so many of the filmmakers who come from abroad say the city reminds them of Blade Runner.

tiemposbuenos commented on Chameleons Use Color to Communicate, Not Hide Very cool!

tiemposbuenos commented on The Suckiest Parts of Lost When Lost is bad, it's HORRIBLE. Asking me to pick out my least favorite moments is a seriously daunting task! I thought the climax of the second season was completely nonsensical (Michael killing Ana Lucia and Libby - as if he had no other alternative; the "women who have sex will die" moments with Shannon and Ana Lucia; Jack being constantly obnoxious and saying he had a "plan", which was basically just getting captured by the Others). I'm surprised no one has mentioned Charlie's miracle resuscitation at the hands of Jack in Season 1! I could go on and on, but I try not to think about these things too much or else I just get angry at how inept Lost can be. I absolutely loved the first season, but started growing bitter in Season 2, and Season 3 just clinched it for me. The stretch of 6 episodes when Jack/Kate/Sawyer were captured was the most boring thing ever. Admittedly, the last stretch of episodes of Season 3 were fun again, but I've already learned to keep my expectations low (and get used to one dimensional characters) when it comes to Lost.

tiemposbuenos commented on Gmail Adds AIM Support to Chat @therbert89: You're right, I tried switching to US English and the features showed up! I'd prefer Portuguese, but I'll make do with American language in the meantime... :)

tiemposbuenos commented on Gmail Adds AIM Support to Chat Ugh, I still don't have these options available on my gmail, and I use Firefox 2. Is it because my account language is in Portuguese? How exactly is this rollout working?

tiemposbuenos commented on Get Lost in Translation Sites I do quite a bit of translating from Portuguese into English (and sometimes Spanish). Even if you speak the languages well (which I do), when translating it can help to look something up in its own language (eg, look up an English word in an English dictionary, not just an Portuguese-English dictionary). Oftentimes this gives you more of the nuances of a word. For lack of a better option, I usually use wiktionary for this purpose, though if anyone has any better tips for a good Portuguese online dictionary, I'd love to hear them! I'd imagine that wiktionary is decent in English, but in Portuguese it leaves a little to be desired.
