Like I said, I'm not upset about "Akira" being remade. Personally, it's not one of my favorite anime movies. And if you read my post, I made that point pretty clear. I don't care if they remake Asian movies. It doesn't really matter for stories like "Infernal Affairs", "Ringu", "Lake House," "Unborn", etc. etc. etc. I think it's good for both industries and for Asian/Hollywood movie industry relations.
What I'm upset about is that they're taking a movie called "Akira" with strong Japanese thematic elements and whitewashing it. Let's be frank dude, this is NOT an "Americanization" of the story. It is flat out whitewashing.
It's like making a Captain America movie with a middle eastern actor.
Not many of you guys get the reason why there is so much outrage. It isn't because the movie is being remade or even because it is being Americanized. It's the BLATANT DISRESPECT that Hollywood is showing to Asians.
No one really fussed about Infernal Affairs being remade into The Departed or Ringu turning into The Ring.
But when you have a movie called AKIRA which features such a quintessential Japanese name and thematic elements directing from war and postwar experiences related to the atomic boming of Japan during WWII and then decide to cast ONLY WHITE ACTORS, then you have a problem.
It's a slap in the face to all Asians.
And please don't give me that argument that Asians can't headline a movie. Because last time I checked, people didn't line up to see Garrett Headlice for "Country Strong."
This is such a freaking joke and an insult. Garett "Deadbeat" Hedlund? Yes, he's the one that made Tron "The Disaster" Legacy such a hit and "Country Strong" the pop culture force of nature it was.
Hollywood's argument for not using Asian actors in starring roles has always been that they are not a box office draw. They say that if investors opt in with millions of dollars they want a movie star to launch the film and mitigate risk.
"Akira" is a Japanese story. The fact that they are even considering Hedlund in this movie only proves that Hollywood is run by a bunch of racist, ignorant morons.
Oh my goodness. You encapsulated all that was wrong with the movie with one word. Reloaded was just plain terrible. Revolutions? If you see that movie as a stand-alone it could be counted as one of the worst big budget movies of all time.
I actually heard somewhere that the original Matrix was written by someone who was not credited and that the Wachowskis "stole" the idea or something. That's why part 2 and 3 seemed so inherently different from the original. Does anyone know anything about that?
I absolutely agree! Well put. If they are going for the "reboot prequel" why use Mystique again? Can't they at least have the decency to use the original 4 characters?
