@Xicer: I'm on the fence a bit, but I see where you're coming from. Sometimes I felt like McGoohan's Six was almost too strong... I never really believed any attempt at hypnosis or psychological control would work on him. The most emotional episode, "Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling", is one of my favorites for bringing some humanity into Six's character... even though it wasn't McGoohan playing him! #theprisoner
@Xicer: "Are you kidding? Avatar gets constantly bashed on io9. There's virtually no love for that movie on this site."
Maybe not in the comments, but it certainly gets its share of hype by the editors.
I'm going to reserve judgement on the story until the end of the series, because I think it's hard to get a feel for it from the first third... but I actually enjoyed the pacing. The original series stretched the boundaries of the attention span at times, and I think the AMC series moved well.
Perhaps I was a touch vitrioloic... it was a gut reaction to seeing "I would avoid it at all costs". #theprisoner
@matthewabel: Ha, yes... my gf endured my watching of the original, until the extended scene of Six playing that game of trampoline pool wrestling. Then she asked me why I thought this was cool.
Opening: long but amusing. The thunder is what sells it. #theprisoner
@Xicer: Consider the dance club scene to be a bit like human chess... weird.
I agree I would have liked less back story in these first two episodes. I feel we got to know a bit too much about his job too soon. However, I prefer that to a three minute opening sequence laying the whole thing out... each episode! How many times to I need to see McGoohan put a picture of a beach into a brief case? :) #theprisoner
@Xicer: I think that Two's wife makes him all the more ominous, not at all likable. Is feels to me as if he's keeping her that way for some reason.
The original series had several episodes that had Six working with Villagers to escape or defy the system... that's in keeping with what happened in "Arrival; Harmony", I'd say. #theprisoner
@Xicer: And what an ending it was! Watching it again on IFC, I'm still left with a "What the hell just happened!?" feeling. It's nice when a series leaves you with stuff to think about. #theprisoner
You, Charlie Jane, are full of shit. I guess I shouldn't be surprised by this review, considering how much io9 seems to love the utterly shitty and boring-looking Avatar.
I'm sorry, but I can't believe we were watching the same program. I definitely loved the classic series, though I wouldn't say I'm a diehard fan... and the AMC version is great. Not at all boring or dull, full of interest, keeping some nods to the old series while significantly (and necessarily) departing from the original story.
Let's face it, there's no way that a character like McGoohan's Six would work in 2009. He was a hulking, brutish egomaniac... that's just not going to fly now. Caviezel, while not my first choice, added a needed touch of humanity while still being a bit of a dick.
Anyhow, terrible review.
@Xicer: I've successfully avoided watching any promos for this one so far... I'm definitely excited to see where it goes. I know there will be things from the original series that will fail to translate, but I've got an open mind going into this remake. #theprisoner
@CodenameV: I don't get why they're even trying to relocate the Na'vi rather than just exterminating them. Perhaps there's a non-human rights group at work as well? #avatar
@kasviel: Maybe that ship launched from Kansas?
Pretty lame line, especially considering that they traveled through space just to get to work. Wouldn't showing up on an alien world be relatively mundane at that point? #avatar
