yogibimbi commented on Apple Not Selling iPhones in Canadian Apple Stores on Launch Day hey, Rogers is not worse than Vodafone Portugal:
29.90 Euro (~50 USD) for 100 min / 100 SMS and 250 MB. I mean, come on, 250 MB??? I have to tell folks not to send me photos as e-Mail attachments. Lucky me I don't need to have an iPhone right now. Nice to have, nice try Vodafone.pt, but please, go rip off somebody else.

yogibimbi commented on Pioneer Pushes Blu-ray Discs to 16 Layers, 400GB Capacity @johneaster: it's both Matsushita, if I remember my Japanese correctly;-)

on another note: There are still holographic disks which did that trick a few years back, and in two or three years microSD will have reached capacities of 64 or 128 gigs, with SD reaching 256 or 512, so, what would you rather have, a little card with higher r/w speeds that fits in your pocket and has a little memory slot in your smartphone, or a drive that bloats up your computer like swallowing a pig bloats an anaconda?

yogibimbi commented on New Study Says Solid State Drives Are Better for Battery Life, Not Worse is coffee on the good list again, by the way? Blogging is thirsty work. Well, coffee is undisputedly on the diuretic list. yogibimbi commented on Second Balloon Man Uses GPS, Kool-Aid To Go Where No Brazilian Priest Has Gone Before @forrestcook: well, maybe because a lot of christians (I don't say all here;-) won't have it any other way. Maybe their reluctance to planning is actually just a front, their belief just an excuse for their inability and ineptitude in it.
Like, when I was living in Mexico City, _a_lot_ of people didn't even properly lock their doors, and that was in one of the most crime-ridden cities of the world. Granted, most of the people I knew there would probably be considered lower middle class and their riches countable on the fingers of one hand but, contrary to general assumption, most burglars do not burgle the rich, but the stupid or, nicer put, the uncautious. Anyway, faith in God is a poor stand-in for sloppiness.

yogibimbi commented on Hey Commenters, Can We Have A Talk ? @Metkis: actually, that's quite thoughtful, you write like your preferred bar didn't serve alcoholic beverages but held exams for admittance. Maybe give the girl some rope, it's often amusing how everybody is falling over themselves at the slightest appearance of sexual innuendo. Of course, it's predictable as hell, but not everything has to be high-brow and original.

yogibimbi commented on iPhone Clone Battlemodo: Which One Is the iPhoniest? @Joseph: well, unfortunately Palm is mostly busy shooting themselves in the foot. The sync is getting worse with every iteration of the OS, and the new OS is getting more and more of a running joke/vaporware. The Centro really is a nice phone, but what used to be the reason for me to stick to Palm (software!) is becoming the reason to get the hell outa there:-(

yogibimbi commented on Question of the Day: Which Hard Drives Have Crashed On You? eeehm, statistically a bit questionable. You should have asked something like 'how many harddisks of which brand have you had and how many out of those have crashed'. Would give a whole more realistical picture.

I had one IBM crash on me about 6 or 7 years ago, but they sent me a replacement within a few days, although the original had long been past its warranty date. Since then I have mostly consciously tried to get Hitachi/IBM, with no more crashes. My sole Seagate, if I remember correctly, crashed badly and quickly, my WD 160 gig managed somewhat to slow my Powerbook down big time, and all other HDs I have owned were oK (two Toshy, one Fuji, I guess, and shitloads of Travelstars - did I mention I like travelstars?;-).

yogibimbi commented on Panasonic's New HD Camcorders World's First With 3-MOS Sensors @1timeonly: yup, they messed up. Don't tell anybody, make a witnessed screenshot and then sue when they come out with the goods;-)

yogibimbi commented on The Third Eye Brings Overhead View to Everyday Life mmm, why not have one of those or those helicopters with a camera buzz around you? Like, you would be carrying some sort of a bluetooth beacon that they home in on and you have an additional remote where you can change an additional amount of parameters relative to you.

yogibimbi commented on Ultra Late Adopter: Why I Don't Want an iPhone... But Will Probably Cave Anyway oK, so I am still sticking to my Centro, which, I guess, also makes me a ULA. But I am still waiting for some decent software to come out for the iPhone, like spreadsheets, word processing, dictionaries, and I'm still slightly miffed that Apple still won't include a microSD, nor a better camera (the one on my SE K750i a few years back was great, why can't Apple at least get something comparable to that now?). But I guess, that's just a few months away now.
Addy, as for the smartphone-always-connected thing: don't sweat it. I'm constantly working on my smartphones, have been reading my e-Mails even via GPRS on my hagenuk S200 three or so years ago and chatted in AIM and MSN on it. I use it to write down shopping lists, mark interesting shops in Navigator on the map, yadda yadda yadda. Yet, I don't have the feeling that I am being overwhelmed by it. It's a tool. Helps me do things I could otherwise not do when I am on the move (and I have read thousands of pages already as eBooks, to boot). But I have my e-Mails set to manual, do very rarely SMS and schedule longer and international calls to be made from Skype on my home computer (the new Europe flat rate is great for that).
A smartphone gives you great options, can vastly increase your productivity. That's it. If you have to whip it out at any occasion just to show people that you have a smart/i-Phone, you're not using it as a smartphone but just as a status symbol and if you are always communicating with folks one way or the other you would most probably have done this with another phone also.
So, advice: take the iPhone for what it is, check out the options it is offering. If you need them, get it, if you don't, don't. It's really as simple as that. And it has kept me from buying it so far and I won't do so, until it becomes the best option for what I need a phone for. Or Palm f...s up so majorly with their software, or I am getting so fed up and annoyed with the increasing amount of basic malfunctionings, above all the sync with my Mac, that I will be suffering something akin to your RAZR-hatred and throw the bloody thing out of the window.

yogibimbi commented on Westinghouse Throws Its Support Behind Universal Adapter Concept ok, I have already been trying to get most of my stuff to run on USB (5 V) and Firewire (12 V). What I, for one, cannot understand is, why camera companies do not use the USB already included in their devices for charging? That should be a real no-brainer. And all those cell phone companies who are still using their proprietary AC adapters and plugs, although they also usually provide USB data and even charging cables. Why not just charge their machines right from the start with mini-USB?

yogibimbi commented on Design the Most Illegal, Jail-Worthy Gadget Possible @Carmen Gets her MBP today!: you don't mean to say Kaiser-Machead was just pulling our collective leg? Shame on him!

But, as for boners: as far as I am concerned, maybe you have to try a little harder, so far it has not worked for me. But maybe that is owed to the fact, that I am actually getting out of the house a bit and do some sports... Matter of fact, I might go for a run just now, it's nice and sunny outside birds are chirping; when I sit straight properly (instead of slunked in my chair), I can see the ocean...
Those things tend to take care of some of the pressures built up;-)

yogibimbi commented on Design the Most Illegal, Jail-Worthy Gadget Possible @Carmen Gets her MBP today!: Hmmm, maybe that boob-slip that got you introduced around these parts, wasn't that much of a slip after all. You seem to be thinking about reproductive organs a lot when you comment... Anyhooo, maybe I'm just sulking, coz Kaiser-Machead gets all the MPEGs and I don't...:-D

As to the gadget-side of things: barbecueing things with a defibrillator is a long-time paramedic favourite, but I'm not doing that kind of volunteer work at the moment, so it would be kind of hard to come by one of those gadgets to set up a working project. Plus the 5 thumbs on every one of my hands don't help much either;-)

yogibimbi commented on EFiX USB Dongle Will Boot and Install OS X on Any PC, Supposedly mmmm, but will it work on an HTC Swift? That's my latest candidate for OS X UMPC (the oqo just got disqualified coz it sneers at touchscreens!). The only thing that baby is lacking is Firewire and they could loose the keyboard. But, well, Apple sure is still not listening to me, so I have to do this with a little help from some shady vendors...

yogibimbi commented on Folding Bike Handlebars: So Obvious, It Took This Long to Think of It @bpatten: yeah, bikes like the Dahone Curve already have folding pedals, so those things already exist.

On another note: I haven't read all the comments, but the article does not mention that, in the visible end of one of the handlebars, you have a lock integrated, so the entire thing is also supposed to be a safety device, implying that a potential thief would not be able to ride the bike back home without handlebars. Which would be pretty pointless against pushing the bike or wholesale thieves who just turn up with a van and throw every bike, that's not up on a tree by the count of three, into the back.

yogibimbi commented on One Wash, One Cup of Water: Nearly Waterless Washing Machine Invented @anatak: well, since I have a single-household, it allows me to wash only once a week, so for me that would mean 2 years. If the plastic recycling problem was solved, I'd say bring it on. Even better so on my boat, since salt water is not useful for washing and carrying around kilos of fresh water just for washing doesn't make the boat any lighter...

yogibimbi commented on iPhone 3G: The Stuff that Didn't Get Upgraded @elgilicious, @thomasav: So, it obviously doesn't make any sense that the Touch is more expensive than the iPhone, even if you factor in carrier subsidization, so what does that mean? Is the Touch going the way of the dodo? Hold your horses, the touch will become diversified, bigger screens, maybe smaller screens, cheaper, more memory. Maybe even buffed up to become the missing UMPC on Apple's prodcut line, although that doesn't make much sense without a full-fledged OS X. And hopefully we'll also get a little Touch, to put around your wrist, or an iPhone, rather, like the Hyundai W-100, for example. Here's to hope;-) Well, in any case, you read it here first:-D

yogibimbi commented on World Gets iPhone and Multiple Carriers per Country, Canada Stops Whining hmmm, Portugal Vodafone and Orange? They just took the 2 smalles carriers. What about tmn and Optimus? Well, whatever. I'm outsourced to PT's/tmn's internet portal, so I was hoping for a decent discount here, but at 299 USD max (probably 250 EUR) there is not much more need for a discount.

On another note (literally). The song is, musically, lyrically and in arrangement pretty meh (nice to listen to at first, but that's about it) but, dude, there are some performers in it. The Bruce is really great and it's always nice to see, and listen to, Cindy Lauper again - what a voice. But even Mr. Jackson and his meandering-in-space voice I am starting to like. Probably means, I am getting old;-)

yogibimbi commented on iPhone 3G: The Stuff that Didn't Get Upgraded ok, I am a bit pissed about the omission of microSD still and have whined about that before.

More Flash would also have been appreciated, as would have been a better camera.

But, on the other hand, it is quite a sound evolution. A lot of things that have been subpar on the first version have been improved, notably what makes a phone a phone, in the first place, which is reception. I have not owned an iPhone so far, but will get one in July, when my finances are right. If his Steveness thinks he does not have to cram in a storage slot, well, f... him for that, but shoving flaky performers out is also an intelligent move.

But, nevertheless, making the thing any thinner really does not rock my boat any more (well, it never did, actually, but it seems it's also been a personal goal for The Steve... - well, I'd wish for him, at least, that it was his free decision to become that gaunt). With the next iteration I'd like to have:

-card slot
-5MP camera w/autofocus and maybe a flash
-video recording
-32-64 flash memory (or maybe -there's still hope- implemented as CF)
-just maybe: an AM/FM radio
-handwriting recognition (well, it's 3rd party already, so don't sweat that, Apple)
-BUILT-IN USB!!- jeez, guys, USB can do data and charge, so what the bloody hell are you still thinking putting in proprietary connectors in your phones, and then offering conncetor-USB adapters, that's really stewpitt

and no more excuses. You are having a really nice phone right now, a good software platform, stop being so tight-assed and high-nosed on features!

yogibimbi commented on iPhone 3G: The Stuff that Didn't Get Upgraded ok, no microSD (or SD). But my required software will come aboard obviously pretty soon, so that's oK. And since I will be developing for that thing, I will get it and slowly fade out my Centro. Any experiences about how good the sync has been working with AdressBook and iCal?
