If you look at the various benchmarks, you'd see it runs neck-and-neck with the 6850, which has a 256-bit bus. I'm wondering why it's limited to 128-bit, but it doesn't seem to hinder performance compared to a 6850.

It isn't only about performance at the price, it's also about efficiency. The 7770 runs significantly cooler, draws less wattage, and performs almost as well. The less energy spent means less money spent, which makes the new cards actually cheaper overall.
That's actually 100% more displacement.
