I'm confused. In Europe, these are marketed as shoe bins already. Didn't know that IKEA decided to leverage the American trend of not removing shoes in the house to sell something they already make for another purpose.
Here's the configuration I use for all the spare kipple rumbling around in my bag. For reference, it fits perfectly in one of the sleeve/pockets along the front of the laptop area of the Booq Boa Squeeze in the picture. (If only the shoulder straps on the version of the Boa I have weren't some of the worst backpack straps ever.)
"The Ziggurat" by Wolfe is a terrifying story. Not because it's a horror story, though. Because it is an excellent exercise in unreliable narrator that, by the end, leaves you realizing that the narrator may very well be the monster. #books
I've always been very aware of my funds at all times. My wife has not. When we first moved in together, we ordered quite a few "$50 pizzas", as I came to call them.
Well, tomorrow marks the first time in a while I'll be headed to my LCBS to pick up another series. The last one was the Dark Tower. Pretty exciting; I hope they do it justice. I love the books.
I'll say it again: Ann Coulter gets to live her life spewing the most vile, hate-filled things into the world and people like John Lennon get gunned down on their doorsteps. That's my ultimate reminder that the world is inherently a bad place. I've got a little microsite that I use to keep this in perspective: [zwaloo.com]
It'll be interesting to see how they incorporate the current-gen MMO concept of a player-based economy in a world that exists due to the complete eradication of poverty and the invention of the replicator. Also, if there's no currency, then what?
When I want a light lunch from a fast food place I get a house side salad with the vinaigrette dressing and a baked potato from Wendy's value menu. Lightly dress the salad and use the container to toss the salad and just use a little touch of butter-like-stuff on the potato, and it holds me until dinner with no problem. And the potato skins are usually always edible and quite good (if you like baked potato skins). There's something to be said for a meal you can get for (in my area) $2.52 that only has one (optional) manufactured ingredient. I'm sure it'd be cheaper to bake my own potatoes and toss my own salad, but this is a great option for days when I'm not sure where my lunch is coming from and I just need to grab something between clients.
Funny! I'm very much reminded of Annette Strean's dress when she sings with the Blue Man Group. The song she sings is "I Feel Love" and her dress is computer controlled to look a bit like an EQ. Check it out.
Came to post the Gene Wolfe comment but got beat. Added bonus, though: my user pic is Severian in his fuligan cloak. The executioners wear it because blood doesn't show on it.
I'll have to agree with the tasp, with one caveat: I'd have to be from a generation of humans that have evolved the ability to resist the power of the tasp just enough to turn it off. Pretty good plot-device by Niven, especially for explaining what is essentially a retcon.
Similar to the Tox-Utaht that Ebone mentioned, the earth in Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun series is lit by a sun that has had a black hole planted in the center of it. I can't recall who did it, since the series is so sprawling and inter-connects with several other series Wolfe has written, but that's another way to kill a solar system-worth of planets.
Snow Crash is a fabulous book and would make a great movie, but as far as a mini-series goes Diamond Age is where it's at. I'm not sure which scene I'm most excited about seeing rendered on-screen: the giant floating airship, the under-sea orgy-powered computer, or the last story the book tells that teaches the girl how to speak computer.
Just talking about it makes me want to slip Diamond Age into the head of my to-read queue. Gene Wolfe's The Wizard is gonna be pissed.
