The Sept. 11 attacks and the Iraq war have reverberated through science fiction and fantasy for over a decade, giving us plenty of stories of terrorism, wars of occupation and clashes of cultures. But Matt Ruff's The Mirage, which comes out next week, might just be the ideal prism with which to refract your memories of that brutal decade and see them anew. Plus it's an addictive, fascinating read, which keeps you guessing. More »

Sometimes it seems like science fiction, and especially fantasy, are genres that lend themselves exclusively to trilogies and long-running series. But some of the greatest writers in speculative fiction have only written standalone novels, not series or trilogies. More »

Rudy Rucker was the first author to win the Philip K. Dick Award, right after Dick's death in 1982. Around that time, Rucker was becoming aware of the new "Cyberpunk" movement and meeting the rebellious authors who were reimagining the union of humans and computers. In this exclusive excerpt from Rucker's new autobiography, Nested Scrolls, he talks about how both events influenced his writing, and what it was like to be a science fiction writer in those strange days. <a href="http://io9.com/5865721/the-death-of-philip-k-dick-and-the-birth-of-cyberpunk" title="Click here to read more about The Death of Philip K. Or at least that's the implication of Dan Hipp's latest fake Tintin graphic novel. Haddock's seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of San Theodoros. He's watched Loch Lomond hallucinations glitter in the dark near the Tanhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like a phone call to Cutts the Butcher. Rutger Hauer would make a fine Professor Calculus. It caused a huge uproar some years ago when the head of a Philip K. Dick android went missing on an aircraft — and now that incident has spawned a book, called Losing the Head of Philip K Dick-A Bizarre but True Tale of Androids, Kill Switches, and Left Luggage by David Dufty. According to The Bookseller, this book is Dufty's account of his post-doctoral research in robotics, where he helped create the PKD android whose head was left in an airplane's overhead compartment. <a href="http://io9.com/5860663/the-long-lost-head-of-philip-k-dick-finally-gets-his-own-book" title="Click here to read more about The long lost head of Philip K. We may find out how Blade Runner's replicants came to be, or what became of them. More »

Philip K. Dick is one of the best American writers. The themes he tackled time and time again have had a profound influence on what we know as modern science fiction today. So, with the latest Dick adaptation, Adjustment Bureau, premiering this Friday, March 4, and a director for Ubik finally announced, I thought I'd take a look back at all the films that have been adapted from his massive repertoire of short stories and novels over the years and see how they all stack up. <a href="http://io9.com/5774867/every-philip-k-dick-movie-ranked-from-best-to-worst" title="Click here to read more about Every Philip K. The Philip K. Dick Award, for science fiction books originally published in paperback instead of hardcover, put out its shortlist for the year, and chances are a few books on the list haven't been on your radar. (The list does include Project Itoh's Harmony, which was one of our favorite books of 2010.) Since these books are all out in paperback, they're pretty inexpensive, and they all sound pretty intriguing. Even though we're exceptionally nervous, and a little skeptical, about the Total Recall remake from Len Wiseman, it's out of our hands. Adapting Dick's seminal novel is guaranteed to be a difficult process, and would have been even if Ridley Scott's Blade Runner weren't already a 30-year-old SF classic. Untitled Theater Company #61 took on the ambitious challenge. And mostly, it worked. More »

In John Alan Simon's adaptation of Dick's posthumous novel Radio Free Albemuth, a record store clerk receives hallucinatory missives from the alien satellite VALIS. The filmmakers are committed to the source material, but the film is uneven. <a href="http://io9.com/5668251/radio-free-albemuth-is-philip-k-dicks-vision-of-a-dystopian-1985-with-alanis-morissette" title="Click here to read more about "Radio Free Albemuth" is Philip K.
R.I.P. Ralph Vicinanza, the agent who brought SF's greatest authors to a foreign audience

Ralph Vicinanza, a literary agent who specialized in foreign rights, died suddenly at his home on Saturday. For two decades, he represented such high-powered authors as Stephen King, Philip K. Dick, Carl Sagan, Robert A. Heinlein, George R.R. Martin, Terry Pratchett and Kim Stanley Robinson, primarily in overseas deals. In 1998, Vicinanza formed Created By, an L.A.-based production/management company that works mostly with science fiction.
