Pierre Carreau employs a variety of high-speed cameras for his AquaViva photo series, giving us an unusual glimpse of watery waves. These images emphasize not only the power and natural elegance of waves, but also the incredibly different shapes waves take as they roll, splash, and curl.
Carreau explains on his website that he especially likes to photograph smaller waves, which show details that aren't as visible on larger waves. I highly recommend looking through the many, many photographs on Carreau's site. Although each individual photograph shows off a striking image of a wave, making it look more like sculpture or perhaps an icy landscape, seeing dozens of his photos one after another offers an appreciation of the variety of shapes, sizes, and power.
Carreau also sells prints of his photographs through Clic Gallery.
