Captivating photography will often convey a sense of depth. Raleigh-based artist Scott Hazard extends this concept to a literal conclusion, merging photography with sculpture to create 2D scenes with 3D elements. Hazard uses carefully torn, layered photographs to represent clouds, smoke, and portals — adding a weird, transdimensional element to his work that is at once subtle and arresting.

Writes Hazard:

If the mind is a reducer, shuffling through an endless stream of stimulus to arrive at the most pertinent information, these pieces are reflections and extensions of this process. As the viewer's gaze enters and traverses the layers of images in each construct, vision becomes tactile, lending an articulated viewing experience and a space for the eyes to linger in each image.
