Whenever we hear about reconnaissance planes, descriptor such as "stealthy" and "slipping under the radar" are bandied around. But what actually goes into making stealth fighters undetectable, and what are the limits of this undetectability? More »

We are quickly perfecting devices that can see behind walls. The latest incarnation of this superspy tech uses radio waves and simulated chaos to pinpoint objects that can't be seen. More »

You're looking at the future site of the Earth's first permanent base on the Moon's south pole. This picture was created this week using NASA Jet Propulsion Lab's new, extra-powerful radar antenna dish, 70 meters across, in the California Mojave desert. Says NASA researcher Scott Hensley, "With these data [from the new radar antenna] we can see terrain features as small as a house without even leaving the office." Find out why the Moon's south pole is a great spot for condos and what it would be like to live there below. More »

One day in the mid-1940s, Raytheon employee Percy Spencer was working with an active radar set when he noticed that a candy bar in his pocket had melted. Spencer got some popcorn, put it in proximity of the magnetron tube that generated the microwaves for the radar, and was soon enjoying a tasty snack. Raytheon received a patent for the microwave oven in October 1945 and built the first Radarange (the name was submitted during an employee contest) two years later—yet the microwave oven didn't become a must-have appliance until the mid-1970s. Why? More »
