With the liberally revamped version of <em>The Day The Earth Stood Still</em> opening next month, it seemed weird that J. Michael Straczynski was <a href="http://io9.com/5079713/babylon-5-creators-forbidden-planet-another-slice-of-retro">rumored</a> to be writing a retro <em>Forbidden Planet </em>movie that kept the peachy keen 1950s look of the original intact. And now it turns out the rumors were wrong &mdash; Straczynski piped up on a Usenet group to say the new movie won't be a continuation of the original, and it won't look like some kind of 1950s pastiche. So how will he pay tribute to the original? <a href="http://io9.com/5082488/forbidden-planet-movie-wont-be-retro-after-all" title="Click here to read more about Forbidden Planet Movie Won't Be Retro After All">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

It's not just JJ Abrams' <em>Star Trek</em> remake that's taking upcoming science fiction back to yesterday's future - Now we're hearing that J. Michael Straczynski's <em>Forbidden Planet</em> movie is similarly setting up a trip in the way-back machine as well. The project, <a href="http://io9.com/5072232/robby-the-robot-makes-comeback-in-forbidden-planet-remake">announced earlier this week</a>, turns out not to be a remake, but a "continuation" of the original movie - complete with an appearance by the original Robby The Robot. <a href="http://io9.com/5079713/babylon-5-creators-forbidden-planet-another-slice-of-retro" title="Click here to read more about Babylon 5 Creator's Forbidden Planet Another Slice Of Retro">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

It seems like only two weeks ago, we were asking where why <a href="http://io9.com/5065088/what-other-classics-need-to-be-given-the-odyssey-treatment">more movies weren't remaking the classics</a>, and apparently Warners was listening... kind of. <em>Forbidden Planet</em>, the sci-fi version of Shakespeare's <em>The Tempest</em>, is getting the makeover treatment, courtesy of <em>Babylon 5</em>'s J. Michael Straczynski and producer Joel Silver. <a href="http://io9.com/5072232/robby-the-robot-makes-comeback-in-forbidden-planet-remake" title="Click here to read more about Robby The Robot Makes Comeback In Forbidden Planet Remake">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

Some of the most awesome science fiction machines ever conceived for film, like the turbo-tank AT-ATs from <em>Empire Strikes Back</em>, were inspired by things the concept designers saw every day. You may already know that George Lucas was allegedly inspired to create the <a href="http://www.starwars.com/databank/vehicle/atat/?id=eu">AT-ATs</a> by these <a href="http://www.portofoakland.com/newsroom/pressrel/pressrel_28.asp">cargo lifters at the Port of Oakland</a> &mdash; but did you know the T-1000 "liquid metal" Terminator was inspired by chocolate fudge? Find out which strangely ordinary items inspired eight of the coolest science fiction machines, and be humbled. <a href="http://io9.com/367603/eight-of-the-oddest-inspirations-for-the-coolest-science-fiction-machines" title="Click here to read more about Eight of the Oddest Inspirations for the Coolest Science Fiction Machines">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>
