Robotech rocked our worlds in the 1980s with its complicated characters and dense mythology. But where's our Robotech movie? Why can't we see Rick Hunter and Lisa Hayes on the big screen? When you really want to show people you care about them, the best present is one that they can spend hours exploring. If you were hoping that Warner Bros' big budget version of anime classic Robotech was going to be... well, good, then the studio's choice of writers may be upsetting. Smallville creators (and vets of The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor and Shanghai Noon) Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have been hired to adapt the Japanese mech epic and, according to the Hollywood Reporter, "add geek cred." Doesn't "cred" normally mean "credibility?" With the Transformers franchise roaring ahead, the time could finally be right for a Robotech movie. The only question is, will Tobey Maguire and Akiva Goldsman stick to the original storyline, about a crashed alien spaceship unifying the whole planet into a military quasi-dictatorship? We could soon find out, since producer Chuck Roven wants shooting to begin next year. More »

It's a good year to be a comic book writer. You can't throw a collectible at a Con without hitting a graphic novel that's just been optioned for a movie. From Marc Guggenheim's Resurrection to Hiding In Time, comics are the new Hollywood pitches. And are Japanese manga and anime next? Astro Boy's studio Imagi just got a hefty new investor, so it's looking more and more as if 2009 will be the year of the big-screen anime adaptation. More »

Robotech, the anime series about Transformers that can take human passengers, is rumored to be getting the masterful touch of Lawrence Kasdan for its live-action movie. This infamous scribe has worked his magic on other legendary movies such as The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders Of The Lost Ark. Robotech has been in limbo for years, since it was purchased by Tobey Maguire's Maguire Entertainment. It was even hinted that Maguire was keen on playing good-looking hero Rick Hunter from the series himself (though he'd need to grow his hair out tremendously). How they are going to compile this entire story of warring intergalactic races and transforming alien mecha technology together is beyond me, but it's ripe for an epic move franchise. More »
