Creepy children who can see the future are a mainstay of movies and television — and a surprising number of them are artistically gifted. Put a crayon or magic marker in the hands of a little prophet, and he/she will draw you a deathly masterpiece every time. More »

Poetry has a reputation for being an indulgent way to yammer on about a subject everyone's already tired of. Sure there are needless epics, but good poetry is actually designed to emphasize the strangest and most dramatic aspects of a situation as quickly as possible. That's why it can be a perfect venue for science fiction. Nothing needs to be over-explained or grounded in reality. Scifi poetry is about taking an original idea to its extreme, and stripping everything else away. Take a look at ten poems that do science fiction awesomely. More »

Wanna ask Ron Moore what the frak was up with Gaius Baltar's sex harem in Battlestar Galactica this season or ask James Callis himself what is was like to be a cult leader? At San Diego Comic Con this year, you can ask via io9. The nice folks over at Sci Fi have opened up the door to the io9 readers to get their questions answered at all of the Sci Fi panels at Con. So if you've got a burning question for the cast of Stargate Atlantis, Eureka, Sanctuary or BSG look no further. See the list a cast and crew available for your questions after the jump. More »

The return of Eureka and its lighthearted scifi tales is nearly upon us, but in the meantime we've got new season three promo pics. Click through for a gallery of the brave new cast, including the one and only U.S. Marshal Jack Carter, from the sunshiney genius town of Eureka. The show's season premiere is July 29, 2008. Eureka, combined with Stargate, should give you plenty of scifi to watch instead of pining for more Lost or BSG. More »

You're always hearing about Flash Gordon this and Buck Rogers that. You see Flash and Buck, snorting their comet-dust and dancing with robots with obscenely shaped heads. But nobody ever thinks about Rocky Jones, Space Ranger, who rocked just as hard back in the 1950s. Did Buck have a comedy sidekick named Winky? Or a sassy navigator named Vena, in go-go boots? Or zig-zag lightning braid on his jacket-cuffs? Here's a clip where Rocky and Winky deal with some sabotage of the Space Affairs Agency. You'll never guess who the saboteur is! More »

One of the worst examples of unrealistic science in movies is the overly simple alien planet. Oftentimes, our heroes will visit the desert planet, or the Irish planet. But the best extraterrestrial worlds in science fiction are the ones with variety and a realistic ecosystem. They have cities as well as countryside, and a range of environments. Here's our guide to the most realistic — and interesting — planets in science fiction. More »

The Sci Fi Channel caused tons of speculation when it announced the other day that it was launching a new online role-playing game that would tie in with a new TV show. Now the first details about this interactive venture are leaking out, and it seems to be another extension of the Stargate franchise. More »

A Transformers fan was singled out by Heathrow airport security for wearing a t-shirt with a print of Optimus Prime wielding a gun. The fan was told that his shirt was offensive because of the gun and he couldn't board the plane unless he changed. Wha? First of all it's Optimus Prime, the GOOD guy: If something is going down on a plane, I'm looking to the guy with the Autobots T-shirt. Second, I really would rather airport security be checking people's bags and not their cotton tops. In case you want to show solidarity with this beleaguered fan, we've got five other weapony scifi tees you can wear to the airport. Or not wear, depending on your willingness to tangle with overzealous officials. More »

People are always so optimistic in B-movies. Like in this sequence from 1954's Killers From Space, when they inject Peter Graves with truth serum and then the colonel says, "Oh, he'll make sense now!" — right before Graves launches into his crazy yarn about googly-eyed Groucho-browed monsters from outer space who brought him back from the dead. And showed him uncanny atomic calculations on the back of TV dinner foil. And made him watch a long montage about clouds and flames and cities in space, and daisies and ... wha, huh? Sorry, the drugs started wearing off. More »

The summer's most anticipated monkey movie, Space Chimps, goes for the really low-hanging fruit (sorry) when it comes to scifi humor. Either the whole movie is full of jokes like this cheesy "Space, the final frontier" routine, or they just packed all those moments into the trailer to reassure the grown-ups they'll have something to giggle at while their kids laugh at the funny monkeys. In any case, chances are you'll enjoy Space Chimps for the kid-reasons — funny slapstick, wormhole rollercoaster — rather than the grown-up" humor. Luckily the kid stuff looks pretty great. Comics anthology Meathus has been showcasing a slew of talented artists for the past eight years, under the Nerdcore banner. The newest edition, Meathaus S.O.S. comes out this May, and features art from superstars like James Jean, Farel Dalrymple, Brandon Graham, Tomer and Asaf Hanuka, Thomas Herpich, Jim Rugg, Corey Lewis, Matt Furie, D-pi, Ross Campbell, Sheldon Vella and Dave Kiersh. Publisher Jon Gibson was nice enough to pull sixteen of the scifi related pages from the book for us to show off exclusively, and you can check them out inside. More »

J.J. Abrams loves Eric Joyner's robot art, and so do we. The Bad Robot maestro is a fan of Joyner's paintings of tin robots in outer space, which inexplicably feature giant donuts. And Joyner's art will be featured as a backdrop in a new romantic comedy flick starring Abrams pal Greg Grunberg (the cop from Heroes) and directed by Lawrence Trilling (many Alias eps.) Joyner also has a bit part in the movie. We've already told you about the scifi-themed songs you might be entertained (or tortured) by if you end up stranded on Asteroid B17-X. But the music-scifi relationship goes both ways: music has been sampling your favorite scifi movies and shows for years. When a musician decides to include a line from Solaris (the original, not the Clooney remake) in their work, that frightens us. Sometimes though, they get it right. We've got a list of the most-sampled scifi in the world of music. More »

On SciFi Channel's Flash Gordon last Friday, we were all once again reminded why today's Ming is not as scary nor as campily compelling as Mings of yore. This scene encapsulates everything problematic about today's Ming. He slurps wine instead of growling; he has no awesome makeup nor a funny hat; and instead of punishing Aura with a mind ray he turns her into . . . a Prefect. WTF? Assigning out bureaucratic jobs is supposed to be his big weapon, his big power move? No wonder they call him Ming the Micromanager instead of Ming the Merciless. More »

Poor David Cronenberg, the artsy B-movie director who brought you Videodrome, Scanners, and A History of Violence. The guy just wants to keep making subversive indie actioners like his recent Eastern Promises, but the world loves him for his early horror work and just wants to keep remaking it into the ground. He told MTV recently that he never watches remakes of his movies, and doesn't plan to see the reboot of head-esploding psychic gorefest Scanners, coming out in 2008. So that got us wondering — what Cronenberg remake would get Cronenberg into theaters? It would have to be The Brood, one of his lesser-known works about a mad psychologist and a bunch of angry killer babies with no anuses. Our pick for director and revamps after the jump. <a href="http://io9.com/336391/screw-scanners-reboot-++-remake-the-brood" title="Click here to read more about Screw "Scanners" Reboot — Remake "The Brood"">More »

You may have been wondering why President Bush vetoed bills that would have authorized government funding for stem cell research that could lead to cures for everything from Alzheimers to paralysis. Apparently it's partly due to reading parts of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, a classic 1930s scifi dystopia about a world where the government genetically engineers everyone to be obedient workers. What's hilarious is that Huxley was a leftist, and he would have despised Bush's anti-science policies. More »

It was a sold-out afternoon show for Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem in downtown San Francisco yesterday, and I was sitting in between two huge family groups who had helpfully brought about half a dozen kids under the age of eight. Good call! This was a family movie, starting off on the right foot with a Predator ship full of Alien specimens crashing in the Colorado forest and immediately implanting themselves in a hunter and his young son. You've got to love a holiday monster movie that's not afraid to kill kids in horrible, gut-munching, blood-spewing detail. People who want dialog that goes beyond "People are dying!" should seek out something else; but monster freaks will love this flick. More »

Catherine Valente, author of adventure tale The Cities of Coin and Spice, says the singularity isn't about artificial intelligence or nanobots. Instead, that scifi moment at which everything "now" becomes "the future" is personal, too: Valente compares the big Singularity to personal singularities like living as a divorced person when you thought you'd be married forever. She also lays down a much-needed challenge to all those wankers who think the singularity can only come about via specific technologies like artificial intelligence. More »

Guillermo Del Toro, who directed Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth, is back for Hellboy II: The Golden Army this summer. Expect loads more monsters and an evil fairy tale look that the director says is more badass than the so-called "dark" versions of various other comic books getting made into movies. (Ahem Batman.) IGN just posted the trailer, which features this Cthulian monster, as well as dozens of other dreamy crawlies. Watch the trailer after the jump. More »

Kim Stanley Robinson Talks About Off-World Architecture

Over on BLDG BLOG there's a fantastic interview with scifi writer/environmental futurist Kim Stanley Robinson, author of the Red Mars trilogy, The Years of Rice and Salt, and the Three Californias trilogy. He geeks out about Antarctica (where he's lived), the decay of Earth's environment, and what civilization might look like on a cold, red planet. Comparative Planetology with Kim Stanley Robinson [BLDG BLOG] More »

Hammer Films were made infamous by their never-ceasing onslaught of schlocky 50s and 60s horror films (think Christopher Lee in Hammer's Dracula), but they also released several great low-budget science fiction films. Now the company, defunct since the early 1980s, is back. They'll be releasing new films on MySpace, including the forthcoming (and winningly-titled) After the Rave, before they become available on DVD. With any luck, they'll be giving us some low-budget science fiction fare to boot. Our picks of Hammer's best scifi schlock after the jump. More »

Forrest J Ackerman is one of those people that you've probably never heard about unless you're a dyed-in-the-wool fan of all things science fiction. However, the man created science fiction fandom virtually one handed, starting back in 1930. Ackerman just celebrated 91 years of scifi fanatacism, and he doesn't show any signs of slowing down. More »
