We mentioned the other day that Kirsten Dunst doesn't seem to be a lock for Spider-Man 4 and 5 yet, and already people are anointing a new lead actress. Best of all, she's someone you've already seen in the movies. Elizabeth Banks played long-suffering Daily Bugle secretary Betty Brant in the first few films, but only had a small role in each one. Now she's a big star, thanks to W and Zack and Miri Make A Porno, among other things. She told CHUD she'll only return to Spider-Man if it's a bigger role, which sounds good to us. After all, Betty had a pretty great run of storylines in the early Spidey comics, including her gangsta brother, and Banks would bring some needed zing to the franchise. Kirsten Dunst told MTV she's "in" for Spider-Man 4 and 5, but then she turned a bit more coy when the site asked if she'd actually signed anything. In other superhero actor news, George Clooney told the Sun newspaper that the bomb-tastic Batman And Robin was great for him: "With hindsight it's easy to look back at Batman and go, 'Woah! that was really sh**, and I was really bad in it.' The truth is, Batman is still the biggest break I ever had. It changed my career. I wouldn't be doing this now if it hadn't been for Batman." So we're already getting very heavy hints that the recently-announced Spider-Man 4 will center around the long-teased-to-the-point-of-not-caring "Curt Connors Becomes The Lizard" storyline that easter eggs in the first three movies have been slowly building to, but that's not why we're excited about the prospect of Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire returning to the Spider-Franchise for two new movies. No, what makes us giddy with glee is the idea that Spider-Man 5 can finally deliver what we've been waiting years for: The movie version of Spider-Man And His Amazing Friends. More »

Not only is Spider-Man director Sam Raimi back in the web-slinging biz for both Spider-Man 4 and 5, but he's bringing his original Peter Parker, Tobey Maguire, back with him, according to insider blogger Nikki Finke. But has Raimi learned his lessons from Spider-Man 3? Early signs point to yes. More »

Tobey Maguire will get one more shot to apologize for emo Spidey. The online rumors that Sony was planning to scrap Tobey as Spider-Man, in favor of new teen sensation Patrick Fugit, have been proved wrong. In a statement to IESB, Sony/Columbia Pictures says, "No one is being considered for the role but Tobey. Period." Fugit hasn't even been approached for the role, they say. But since Tobey is still only being "considered" for a comeback, we still think there are a few other actors that Sony should consider as well. After the jump, our list of actors who we think would make a better Spidey than Tobey... plus some new hints about Spidey 4's villain. More »

Spider-Man 4 may or may not be a great movie, but at least it's looking like you'll have a clear sense of the plot is leading — straight into Spider-Man 5. According to Cinematical, James Vanderbilt has turned in a "working" draft of Spider-Man 4 which has a story arc that leads directly into the fifth movie. The two separate films are set so close together that both Spider-Man 4 and 5 could be shot at the same time.
