I can't stop staring at this gorgeous image of a Klingon Warbird coming down on the USS Sagittarius (NCC-1894) in a low-atmosphere battle. This is the cover of this year's Star Trek: Ships of the Line calendar, and it's really splendid — even though I can't tell where that yellow burst of energy hitting the Sagittarius' left nacelle is coming from. Another warbird? Speaking of completely improbable comic book crossovers, here's something completely different. This May, IDW Publishing will release an Eleventh Doctor/The Next Generation mash-up comic book starring The Doctor, Rory, Amy, Picard, Worf, Data, Geordi, Troi, and Riker. Holy baloney, this has the potential to be even crazier than the time Wolverine drank all that prune juice with Whoopi Goldberg. More »

In science fiction, everybody's always running and flying and questing, and time is always running out. So that makes those occasions when our space heroes and future warriors take the time to kick back and relax in a bar that much more alluring. There's nothing like a tall cold one when you're fighting the Dark Side. More »

Like many people, I've been slowly rewatching Star Trek: Deep Space Nine ever since it popped up on Netflix. And one thing becomes clear: in many ways, 2012 has already overtaken DS9 as The Future goes — barring, of course, space travel and replicators. Culturally, at least, we've zoomed right past Star Trek's version of the 24th century, by the second decade of the 21st. More »

When you think about science fiction theme tunes, chances are there are a few that are especially stirring and heroic. Star Wars. 2001: A Space Odyssey. Star Trek: The Next Generation. Superman: The Movie. And all of these theme tunes have something in common: they rely on the same basic intervals. More »

Hollywood loves to give us happy endings — but often as not, when the good guys scrape a last-minute victory in the face of incredible odds, you're left wondering how long it'll last. Maybe part of the reason why that victory seems so miraculous is because it'll never work. More »

A couple of days ago, the esteemed Charlie Jane Anders looked at the dearth of new, sustaining pop culture heroes and villains. That, with the exception of Harry Potter, we haven't seen a new character with the perceived permanence of a James Bond or a Captain Kirk or Spider-Man — and she blamed it on a lack of a pulp media. Ah, but she was looking in the wrong place. More »

We've seen kaiju inserted into yard sale paintings and vampiric 1800s facsimiles of Nicolas Cage. In the spirit of such portraiture comes Alex Gross' series of science fiction cabinet cards, in which he takes poor dead bastards who kicked it 100+ years ago and repaints them as pop icons. Over a decade into the 21st Century, our imaginations are captivated by creations of the 19th and 20th. Sherlock Holmes rules television and movies. We're eagerly awaiting new movies about James Bond, Captain Kirk, Superman, Batman and Spider-Man. Where are the 21st Century mass-media heroes and villains? Why isn't anybody even trying to create them? More »

Death comes for everyone — but it doesn't always come in style. Sometimes instead of a heroic death or a cool death, a fictional character will get kind of a crappy death. (Often literally.) Sometimes a beloved character will die in a totally motifying fashion. More »

LEGO builder Christer Nyberg constructed this reproduction of Khan Noonien Singh's favored ride from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. The entire project took him over a year and required somewhere between 10,000-15,000 LEGO bricks. The lights are a nice touch, but this vessel's life support systems won't keep you alive while in the orbit of Ceti Alpha V.

If your Settlers of Catan games are anything like mine, pulling the Monopoly card inevitably leads to the dredging up of old slights and someone inevitably leaves the room swearing by the time Longest Road is awarded. We've all seen the predictions — both fictional and pseudoarcheological — that the world will end in 2012. But while some of science fiction's predictions for the year 2012 are apocalyptic, some are merely disastrous — and a few are downright upbeat. Let's see what triumphs and tribulations science fiction says we can look forward to in the coming year. More »

The Star Trek sequel just got a lot more fascinating. Benedict Cumberbatch — who's been rocking our screens as the BBC's Sherlock Holmes and voicing Smaug in The Hobbit — will play a villain in Trek 2. (Or Trek 12.) Which means he'll probably have a lot of scenes with Peter Weller, who's playing the main villain's older sidekick. Robocop and Sherlock, together at last. NuKirk and friends don't stand a chance. More »

One reason we're addicted to science fiction and fantasy: the characters and their weird, conflicted relationships. And there's nothing more addictive than characters who can't decide whether to kill each other or run away together. Friends who sometimes hate each other, or enemies who secretly admire each other. More »

Like any reasonable person, you've thought to yourself, "Self, I truly would love to store some Earl Grey in the likeness of DeForest Kelley's cranium." Well, sculptor Mark Nathan Stafford has acted on this notion and crafted this "Doctor Bones" teapot out of Leonard McCoy's knowledge-filled head. This was created for the Ossuaries project, and the water comes out of his left ear. Anyone up for making a Karl Urban model?

When you call for a doctor in the 31st century, you have a wide choice of physicians. Hell, you can call up multiple versions of Neil Patrick Harris depending on whether you need a high school MD or a PhD in horribleness. Hopefully, you just want them for their minds. More »
