Have we seen the last of Worf? Not if Michael Dorn gets his way. The Star Trek: The Next Generation star wants to make a brand new low-budget movie, either direct to DVD or for cable TV. He's writing it himself — he's already started — and he thinks it could go alongside the big budget J.J. Abrams movies without cannibalizing the audience. More »

We're going to be talking about this past weekend's episode of Game of Thrones for a long time — it was a war epic and a dramatic tour de force, filled with palpable ambition. But this isn't the first time a single episode of television has redefined what's possible in the medium. More »

We can all think of characters that we'd like as sidekicks. But sometimes things aren't all about us, personally. There are people out there who just plain need those sidekicks more. The love of Star Trek and other classic space operas is built on compromise, and a certain amount of irony. So many tropes in these shows are stylized to the point of unreality, and things happen to punch up the story, rather than for any real reason. Especially the deaths of "redshirts," or random extras. More »

When it comes to movie series, the third time is definitely not the charm. Some of the best movies ever made are the second films in a franchise — but it's a rare third film that achieves true greatness. This Friday sees the release of Men in Black III, and everybody's wondering if it can be better than the underwhelming MIB II. More »

What would Star Trek V have been like if Leonard Nimoy had played both Spock and his misguided brother Sybok? Answer: Probably still pretty terrible, all other things being equal. More »

Some day, people from the distant future will travel back to our era and inform us that science has conclusively identified the best movies about time travel. Until then, though, we're forced to make our own judgements. Luckily, there are a few time-travel movies that have rocked our space/time continuums more than any others. More »

In Star Trek lore, the first Starship Enterprise will be built by the year 2245. But today, an engineer has proposed - and outlined in meticulous detail – building a full-sized, ion-powered version of the Enterprise complete with 1G of gravity on board, and says it could be done with current technology, within 20 years. "We have the technological reach to build the first generation of the spaceship known as the USS Enterprise -– so let's do it," writes the curator of the Build The Enterprise website, who goes by the name of BTE Dan. More »

Nobody expected Leonard Nimoy to return to Fringe the way he did last week — after all, the science fiction MVP had retired from acting. And the show had gone to crazy lengths to include his character, William Bell, without requiring his physical presence, including an animated episode and a "bodily possession" storyline. More »

When Alien came out in 1979, roboticists were making wheeled boxes that crashed into walls. Ash - the film's traitorous android - was pure fantasy. But when Prometheus comes out this summer, Weyland Industries' David 8 enters a world with plenty of real-life androids. More »

If Star Trek were a thrilling radio drama sandwiched between Ovaltine ads and spots for the dyspepsia-fighting power of Moxie, then the Enterprise might possibly bear a resemblance to its long-lost cousin, Guido Fallei's amphibious dirigible gyrocopter. As the September 1930 issue of Popular Mechanics explained of Fallei's craft: More »

A major question surrounding Prometheus is how it could live up to the intensity of the original Alien — while still getting that all-important PG-13 rating. But now, the head of Fox revealed he won't compromise the movie for the sake of hitting the PG-13 mark. More »

It turns out that watching the first two seasons of original Star Trek all at once is kind of addictive. Really, try it. You won't be able to look away. It's something about the way the theme tune comes on pane by pane, in staggered increments, so that the soaring opera wail appears over and over again, and the Enterprise zooms past again and again. And then there's the endless ripple of Shatner closeups, with the weirdly illuminated eyes. I defy you not to watch this all the way through. [Thanks to whoever sent this to us!] More »

It's been seven years since Star Trek went off television, but the Star Trek alumni still own your television screens. If there's a television show rocking your world or challenging your preconceptions, chances are there's a former Trek producer in the mix somewhere. Or someone who learned from a Trek producer. More »

Many of science fiction and fantasy's most epic stories are also great love stories. Love is the ultimate mystery, and a huge motivation for many of our favorite characters. But sometimes, even with warp drives and magic flying horses, the hardest part of a fantastical story to believe in... is the romance. More »

We love science fiction and fantasy with a pure, burning adoration. And our love of these genres helps make them better, because we support our favorite creators, create our own works and trade cool ideas. But sometimes, fandom has a dark side. Sometimes, fans can fall into self-loathing, and this can lead to some destructive behavior patterns that actually corrode the awesomeness of SF and fantasy. More »

Love is the greatest adventure of all. And it's one that no holographic mentor or alien sidekick can prepare you for. So it's lucky that science fiction and fantasy are chock full of stories of people who've played the game of love... and won. (Or, in some cases, just not died.) More »

When Eureka comes back for its final season next week, the town of geniuses is going to look very different than what we're used to. And meanwhile, Fringe changed up its entire timeline for its current season — which is looking more likely to be the show's last, unless Warner Bros. basically gives the show to Fox for free. But Eureka, and possibly Fringe, are part of a long tradition: Science fiction and fantasy shows that got a total reinvention in their final season. More »

In 1992, plans were in the works to create a life-sized Starship Enterprise in downtown Las Vegas. The model ship would have been roughly as long as the Eiffel Tower is tall, and would have contained all the key rooms and areas from the original Star Trek series. Vegas business owners loved the idea, and so did Paramount Licensing. So what went wrong? More »

Fandom can be miraculous. Fans bring so much creativity and love to science fiction and fantasy universes, and along the way they work an amazing transformation. And sometimes it feels like the stories the fans create are actually cooler than the works they're based on. More »

One of the wonderful things about our television obsessions is, they keep us guessing. But sometimes, when someone asks a straight question and doesn't get a straight answer, it can get a bit annoying. Mysterious non-answers are a staple of television science fiction and fantasy — and sometimes it feels like people are just bending over backwards to avoid saying what they know. More »
