It seems like the most blatantly circular reasoning ever, but when researchers wanted to determine whether there's a genetic component to people's willingness to respond to a survey, there was only one way to do it. If you want to save the world, you should study worst-case scenarios for the future, according to 20,000 science fiction fans. The Sci Fi Channel did an online poll, through its Visions For Tomorrow initiative, to find out the top "things to read, watch and do to save the world." And the winners were dark tales of a world gone to hell, including Blade Runner, 1984, Firefly, the new Battlestar Galactica and The Matrix. An exclusive first look at all the winners, below the fold. More »

Only 29.4 percent of Americans believe nanotechnology is "morally acceptable," compared with 62.7 percent in Germany and 72.1 percent in France. The difference has to do with religion, says a University of Wisconsin professor: Americans believe nanotech researchers are "playing God" by trying to extend humans' capabilities. With nanotech poised to give sensation to artificial skin, cure brain cancer and even make your blood cells intelligent, you could see a gulf between European post-humans and American ortho-humans in a few decades if these views translate into law. (But note: the survey in question had a sample size of only about 1,000.) Light-emitting nanowire image from Harvard. [Science Daily] More »
