His kraken is quite an original and fReAkY design, sort of a Mythos whale/squid/crab thing. I like it. The Nautilus and the diving suits look great but not at all appropriate to the 19th Century.
Still not happy with McG (hey buddy, buy a vowel already) screwing with the first "grown up" book I ever read.

io9 did a post on Greg DeSantis' cgi models once before. He did this very fine Nautilus punked out to steamy glory.

I guess they forgot there is supposed to be a Victorian aesthetic in the design.
. . . So let me guess . . .this takes place in an alternate timeline? Yeah, that's it, an alternate timeline!

@templepriest: Oh dear, let's not give them any ideas. If McG's version of Captain Nemo gets "updated" like Spielberg's War of the Worlds I shall become ever so cross.

It's all unbelievably cool. Also, completely unbelievable as a mid 19th century design. It looks like a spaceship from the 25th century, and the crew's diving suits look like futuristic power armor. You can't just slap rivets on any old thing and call it "steampunk".

    The Bat-Sub.

You gotta have the cod piece on the dive suit. Wouldn't be a dive suit without a proper cod piece.

@aubreyAubrey: That's what I was thinking. It looks like it stumbled off the set of Michael Bay's Transformers. You'd expect a steampunk movie to have a steampunk aesthetic, which isn't shown here at all.

Wouldn't Naveen Andrew be a vastly better choice, considering the fact that he can actually ACT?

I agree. Naveen Andrews would be SOOO much better. He is a good actor and he is good to look at. No offense to Will Smith, but he's becoming a little tired to me. He's getting the 'Denzel Washington Syndrome' wherein he plays the same character in everything no matter who the character is...

Will Smith playing Nemo is just as wrong as his little spoiled brat of a son playing Ralph Macchio's character in the Karate Kid.

McG is a fucking terrible director, and it really bums me out to hear that he's the one remaking 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. The guy needs to go back to directing shitty rock videos. Goddamn you McG.

Will Smith is definitely capable of playing in comedies, but anything else ... he's complete shit (I Am Legend for example).

I wish someone would take this out of McG's hands after seeing what happened with Terminator. This guy has all the directing talent of my butthole, and somehow he keeps getting these big properties that could be really great in the hands of someone with even a vague sense of taste. My only hope is that this film becomes the horrendous disaster that finally gets McG blacklisted from Hollywood.
