@Tomb: R.O.A.C.H.: No. It's intermittent. I had it happen everywhere I commented today. Once I reloaded the page, the pic appeared.

I ran across this guy's story in the nytimes, thought it had io9 written all over it:

[www.felixbaumgartner.com]

Felix Baumgartner's a record holding skydiver/base jumper who's going for a jump from the stratosphere 120,000 feet up.

In addition to setting records, the jump will risk life and limb to amass a body of data that will eventually help save astronaut's lives.

Also interesting is what this stunt says about NASA. The reason this is being undertaken by a private individual backed by corporate money (Red Bull) is because:

"Air Force and NASA officials have become understandably reluctant to explain potential mishaps to Congressional committees."

Their medical director, Dr. Jonathan Clarke went as far as saying:

"This is really risky stuff, putting someone up there in that extreme environment and breaking the sound barrier. It’s going to be a major technical feat. It’s like early NASA, this heady feeling that we don’t know what we’re up against but we’re going to do everything we can to overcome it."

In my opinion, this elucidates all the reasons the private sector is the future of space travel. NASA is just too encumbered, and frankly just doesn't have the balls.

@Gann: All true, but I think this guy is going to die. I don't wish for it, but the chance that he's going to survive is pretty small, in my opinion.

@Roklimber: you're more than likely right, but that just adds to the fuck-all awesomeness of it. Although, I would give him about the same odds as NASA's first astronauts.

@Gann:

I think that, if he survives and succeeds, it's going to be a slap on NASA's face. On the other hand, I don't really think he's going to succeed and he may likely die.

As for comparing the odds, I think NASA's first astronauts had a better chance, because they had far more people working on their behalf.

@Roklimber:

They had more people, but these guys are starting from a better body of knowledge. Yes, they're still pushing the envelope, but they're not pushing quite as far into the unknown.

That being said, you're right - he's probably going to die.

Hey, Annalee, I have a chartporn suggestion to make.

It just occurred to me that it would be interesting to see a distribution of how many views different kinds of articles have here on io9.

And, along with that, the distribution of the number of posts for different kinds of articles.

Maybe there will be something interesting to draw from them.
