Regarding last night's Caprica...

I bet a million cubits that Vergis is behind Amanda's visions of her dead brother. He's making Amanda go crazy because he knows that Daniel loves her. He's also brewing trouble between them by telling Amanda that he thinks Daniel has stolen the MCP chip.

Here's one for you: set in the future, enhanced humans engage in martial arts battles. Only our hero shuns enhancements. His girlfriend is kidnapped by the evil guy who runs the games---and in the most evil idea I've seen in awhile--not only blackmails the hero with her life, but also the fact that he can brainwash the girl to make her think that he [the villain] is the hero and basically rape her while she thinks she's having sex with her boyfriend. Anyone? Bueller?

Ok here goes. There was a movie on TV in the eighties. One guy is working on teleportation. He steps on a pad and actually teleports to another pad that was at his girlfriends or ex. But she was working on a robot. He becomes a cyborg but it's not apparent at first.

I also seem to remember at the end he was swimming in the ocean and kicked off his shoes. No idea why I remember that part.

@Kevin Howell -The Unseen Commentor: Can you describe anything else about the movie? I have vague memories of a movie that involved teleportation, the woman was blonde, they ended up on a strange world and were trying to get back home, they ran into a blue guy who shot arrows with glowy orange balls on the ends.

I don't remember any cyborgs, though, but I was probably 4 or 5 years old when I saw it on Showtime.

It's probably not the same movie that you're thinking of, but your description reminded me of my own lost movie!

@dansabato001: There are some buttons at the bottom of the box. Left opens the options for pictures, either upload (which never worked for me) and URL link. Past the URL into the link box.

No deletion options for posting. Only an edit window of 15 minutes.

I might add that some commentary with pictures or links is welcome. Unless the picture is particularly awesome and no words are needed.

Sceptic challenges guru to kill him live on TV
[www.timesonline.co.uk]

When the guru’s initial efforts failed, he accused Mr Edamaruku of praying to gods to protect him. "No, I’m an atheist," came the response.

The holy man then said he needed to conduct a ritual that could only be done at night, outdoors, and after he had slept with a woman, drunk alcohol and rubbed himself in ash.

The men agreed to go to an outdoor studio that night — all to no avail. At midnight, the anchor declared the contest over. Reason had prevailed.

Score another one for reason.

@Roklimber: Quick question for you: do you think that Richard Dawkins is wasting his time with his atheist crusade? Science seems like a much more worthwhile pursuit, and atheism seems so overwhelmingly obvious. Isn't he mostly preaching to the choir?

@AlexKap: "do you think that Richard Dawkins is wasting his time with his atheist crusade?"

No, I don't.

"Science seems like a much more worthwhile pursuit, and atheism seems so overwhelmingly obvious."

To you and me, yes. To the majority of the world's population (who are either illiterate, uneducated, extremely poor, or any combination of those), most definitely not. And certainly not to most of the American population.

"Isn't he mostly preaching to the choir?"

I'm afraid so, but he's gaining ground, slowly, and that's progress.

@Roklimber: Most people don't know what science actually is, either. They think of it as analogous with magic - ignoring the rigor an experimentation that is the backbone of real science.

@AlexKap: On his website are countless testimonies from people who were raised amid religious fundamentalism and have since had their minds opened.
Knowledge of science is not something to be taken for granted. As someone who grew up in a secular home, it is often difficult for me to imagine the level of systematic brainwashing that some people undergo from an early age. These people are not dumb, nor are they be perpetually resistant to reason. I think Dawkins is doing good.

@Roklimber: Wow, what a great story and a great guy! Mr Edamaruku is my new hero. (I just have to repeat this next bit, I'm so impressed) Since taking over the Indian Rationalist Association he's expanded membership from 300 members to 100, 000. What dedication - I can't believe I didn't know anything about him until now.

So a while back you guys talked about the laser test that was mounted on a Boeing 747. Well now they've built a true Free Electron laser prototype (not a chemical one like on the 747) for ship based defense.
