Hello everyone, Larry Dixon here. I just finished the edits for the first of five Secret World books for Baen. Steve Libbey, bless his heart, has had awful health problems and is out of the picture for a while. I'll be taking over the characters of Mercurye and Verdigris, and doing the editing chores for the series, as well as the covers. No rest for the wicked, eh?
Thank you so very much for the shout-outs. The podcasts were a blast. In the months to come, we'll build a recording booth here at High Flight and I'll do the voicework for new material.
It always feels good to give stuff away. We wish more creators felt that way. I mean, bills have to be paid and all, but there's something soulful about sharing for free just for the grins, too.
I've been saying this for years now... some of the best new fiction out there is coming from Podiobooks.com. These authors are pushing new boundaries by not following the standards of publishing, and it's breathing new life into the fiction market. With FREE fiction for your listening tastes. There is something for everyone in this market, even if you don't like fiction.
If it wasn't for this genre of listening, I would never had my mind blown away by Matt Wallace's Next Fix. Or go on the paranoia rollercoaster of James Melzer's Zombie Chronicles.
Sigler brings world changing scenarios that are plausible. Hutchins is a cliffhangering bastard. Mur Lafferty's characterization for any of her works is fantastic stuff. Decoder Ring Theater brings the old school feel of the radio serials.
Mur Lafferty, Scott Sigler, and JC Hutchins all have great Sci Fi Books. For the Sci Fi Geek that loves football, make sure you check out Sigler's - The Rookie. For those that want a little more hard core Sci Fi, there is Bill DeSmedt - Singularity!
podiobooks.com is a great resource for getting some great fiction.
For the more visually-oriented here, I must point out Scott Sigler's "Infected" (as well as it's New York Times bestselling sequel "Contagious"), J.C. Hutchins's "7th Son", Mur Lafferty's "Playing for Keeps" are available in print, so don't let the fact that this post is talking about audio podcasts dissuade you from these great novels--and these are just the tip of the iceberg of the great fiction available for free.

This is great: I'm always complaining (to myself, in my head) that I don't read enough Science Fiction anymore, and that I waste too much time on the internet. Now I can waste time on the internet and read Science Fiction at the SAME TIME!
Lauren, thank you so much for these suggestions. I just listened to the first hour of Playing For Keeps and it is *awesome*! It's intriguing, hilarious, and I can't wait to listen to more of it. And the author's voice is very nice too, which often makes a big difference for me when it comes to audiobooks.
i haven't bothered to browse the comments long enough to check if someone has already pointed this out or not but 'Podiobooks' sounds suspeciously like a genre of porn.
Hello, Lauren. I'm Tee Morris, one of the founders of Podiobooks.com as well as the first novelist to podcast a novel (MOREVI, starting in January 2005) and one of the writers featured in VOICES: New Media Fiction.
I just wanted to thank you for featuring Podiobooks here at io9.com. Since its early days, Chris Miller, Evo Terra and I were hoping this concept of podcast fiction would catch on; and when I see lists and articles like this, I think that maybe what Scott Sigler, Mark Jeffrey, and I did back in 2005 on The Dragon Page wasn't such a bad idea after all. I am proud to say I know all of these talented authors featured here, and have worked alongside them in other podcast fiction projects. If it were not for the podcast medium, these incredible stories would have remained untold, and I am grateful that so many have taken the time to listen.
This movement of podcasting fiction is not going away anytime soon, and support from online resources like io9 only helps new and established authors discover a way to offer their works to new audiences around the world.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration to Podiobooks.com. Keep listening.
I'd also point out the fantastic Wormwood podcast. They do a top-notch radio drama style show. If you liked Twin Peaks, X-Files, or anything by Lovecraft this is a show you need to give a shot!
Oh heck yes, Scott Sigler's books totally got me into audiobooks. Just be careful while driving, you will find yourself doubled over laughing or physically recoiling in horror!
