True story: pilots are told not to eat a lot of beans before flying.
    Now you know why.

That's the F/A-18 that made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs.

I'm in Detroit and when they were practicing for the flyovers during the race, they scared the crap out of people in the area who had no warning of what was going on.
My g/f called me at work, sounding scared, "What the hell is going on?" Since I hadn't left a dead hooker in the bathroom that morning, I had no idea what she could be referring to.
    "What are you talking about?"
"We just got buzzed by a fighter plane. All the cats are hiding in the basement and the neighbors are outside looking at the sky."
I check the local news sites and seeing that Canada wasn't attacking, told her, "I dunno." While we were talking, I heard it fly over another time.
Anyways, the main picture in this story isn't as impressing as THIS ONE:

Funny thing is, they don't explain it, io I will: what's happening in this picture is a shock wave causing adiabatic cooling of water vapor which can make this drmatic form when a plane traveling LESS than the speed of sounds travels through moisture-laden air. This is agood, but not great picture of the phenomenon.

High humidity, transonic (not supersonic) airflow over the airframe, shock wave drag causing vapor to condense...happens all the time, although this one is nice and thick.

Who cares? Just google "Sonic Boom" in images for plenty of better examples.

@zenseeker: If it was over Detroit, then there was no sonic boom. This picture is different than the ones you refer to - note how defined the shock cones are in the trans-sonic shots.
