wow, i've heard of Genesis II, but never seen it, nor have i even heard of Planet Earth. looking forward to these.

you said that these aired but were not picked up for series, so are these DVD releases just the pilots? some of the comments seem to suggest that they did make some episodes??

    now, where's Man From Atlantis!?

I was once at a small gathering of actors in a friend's house and Mariette Hartley was there. She did a hilarious impersonation of William Shatner hitting on her. She said he looked like a dinosaur, and she held her hands like a Tryanosaurus Rex during the impersonation.
Earlier she had done a reading at UCLA as Mary Shelley. I also remember Vic Tayback doing an awesome reading as Edgar Rice Burroughs.

I saw this on the *gasp* SciFi Channel when I was a teen. I remember seeing the two navels and thinking "Two umbilical cords? WHY?"

I was clearly not the target audience for two navels.

What about "Spectre" with Robert Culp and Gig Young as a supernatural Holmes & Watson type team.

Did they all have two navels? I thought it was just this one's particular mutation. "I'm a babe, but see I have a mutation."

I much prefer Planet Earth to Genesis II. John Saxon is a way more fun and charismatic Dylan Hunt than that mustache guy. It's got Ted "Lurch" Cassidy (shirtless ladies!) as the Native American Spock stand-in, an Empath named Balok, and an intriguing androgynous girl who is supposed to be sexless but turns pretty quickly in the pilot episode.

Interesting note- in Genesis II (and Planet Earth?) they use sex to revive Dylan Hunt from cryo- sleep- it's the only thing that activates the needed survival instinct.

If you're a Next Gen fan and you haven't seen Planet Earth, you have to- it's a very interesting bridge between Original Trek and TNG.

@John Hazard: I have owned both of these for y ears.and i watched at least one if not both i think when they aired in the 70's.
both are fun entertaining examples of 70's scifi tv.

Poor John Saxon. He was in, like, 20 of these dead-end pilots for Roddenberry.

This line would be perfect delivered like an old thirties noir film.

Man, Gene Roddenberry really did have a type. I remember confusing Bibi Besch (Carol Marcus) with Majel Barrett, and either of them could substitute for Mariette Hartley pretty easily.

@ClauClauClaudia: Actually, I doubt that Roddenberry had anything to do with casting Bibi Besch as Carol Marcus. He had no saying over the making of THE WRATH OF KHAN. Harve Bennett and Nicholas Meyer made that movie.

I've read interviews with Gene Roddenberry in which he admits the only reason he gave the Tyranians two navels was petty revenge. In the 1960s, female navels were taboo so when the standards were relaxed in the 70s he decided to have an alien woman with two navels. I dunno, is the female bellybutton inherently sexual?

@Bill-Lee: Yep. No story-related reason whatsoever, he just wanted to make up for all the navels he couldn't show on Star Trek. I think he said that at the time, even.
