Those 'nodes' seem to be in weird places for neural connectivity. They're not along the spine or in the skull where nerve access would be easiest.
The nerve could be rewired to the point where the connection attaches to the skin, but then it would make more sense to put them somewhere more convenient. I would prefer to be able to lie down when I was jacking in.
I suppose it's symbolic of his connection being his burden.
@Gann: or, in a different take, they're not in those places because this way when a jack needs to be removed and/or fixed it doesn't require a neurosurgeon.
For me, the first thing that comes to mind when hearing about cyberpunk applied to unique cultures is George Alec Effinger's Middle Eastern cyberpunk-gangster-gumshoe novel, When Gravity Fails, it'd be great to see more movies explore this
I remember seeing Why Cybraceros? eight or nine years ago. It had an intentionally cheap and cheesy look to it but I was really intrigued by the concept and am delighted that he has developed it into what looks to be an excellent film. I call for an Bay Area io9 field trip when it opens!
Rivera is very creative in thinking about future of global trade and technology.
He's right, autonomous robots are still only advancing slowly, the problem is motor intelligence, sensing and navigation. But if we put human driver in charge of the robot, that problem is quickly solved--as our Hellfire launching UAVs have demonstrated. The police already do this when confronting hostage takers or other dangerous situations.
There are people who pay kids in China to power level MMORPG characters for them and apparently these Chinese gamer boiler rooms still turn a small profit.
Is it so far fetched that someone somewhere will actually try something like this one day soon? Maybe the robot butler science fiction has so long predicted may become fact but not in the way we expect.
Of this could lead to all kinds of new problems. Imagine a disgruntled worker in Costa Rica that decides to go postal with a 12 ton garbage truck robot in NYC?
