I'm still a little mystified how they managed to make such a complete mess of both movies.
All they needed to do was pick a story from one of the 100 or so DarkHorse AVP comics, and film it, simple yes?
But noooooo, not for Hollywood..much better to pick up the phone and go "Hey Paul/Strause brothers, if we give you 50 million bucks do you think you could completely ruin two of the best loved sci fi franchises of all time? yeah cool. Make sure it doesn't make much sense in the context of the old movies, that's important. what? Aliens in the present day? that makes no sense but it sounds cheap to film, I love it. Cool, we'll do lunch when it's finished.."
@Bill-Lee: Yeah... I watched AVPR two years ago on cable, while in the throws of a high fever... Even the trippy point of view I had at the time didn't save that mess.
The AVP games were some of the best at nailing the cinematic feel of the story, of capturing the atmosphere, whilst still actually remembering that they were *games*, not *movies*.
You say that the AVP movies being dead is a good thing, but I would like to disagree. I found the first one to be decent enough, the second was horrible so I will give you that.
I am still holding out hope they would do one on the Alien or Predator home world. I think that throwdown would be awesome and far better than the grabage that was the AVPR. Still the concept art here is wicked cool and is getting me more excited for the game.
@Makidian: I agree. That little glimpse we got in the beginning of AVPR was rather sweet. Let's see if Scott's Alien prequel A- gets off the ground, and B - if it makes any money... that might be the deciding factor. Or C - how greedy Fox feels...
"Predators will make the original movie's title plural and up the ante by taking characters to (potentially) the home planet of the first movie's monsters."
this would be a bad thing how? i mean sure, lambast it for being unoriginal but that doesn't mean it will automatically suck. i'll reserve judgment until i found out how much/little of predator society is revealed in the film at least.
"So, let's see - Aliens made the original movie's title plural and upped the ante by taking characters to (potentially) the home planet of the first movie's monster"
Putting aside the home planet issue that's already been addressed, they're also very, very different movies. They share the same hallmarks (dank, claustrophobic spaces, body horror, Lovecraftian bug-monsters), but Alien was a straight up horror movie, whereas Aliens was an action movie.
I wondeer if on of the "...horrors (that are not always from outside their group)..." is that one of the humans works for a mega-corp and wants to smuggle one of the things back for the weapons division?
I'm guessing someone in the group is attacking the the others in serial killer/ sexual predator style. It could be a bit like Riddick in Pitch Black but we end up rooting for the nonhumans to destroy the monster.
Hey, what if instead of Colonial Marines the humans are from a convict transport, Con Air/Botany Bay.
"Daily life in an average city of innocent dreadlocked, fang-mouthed citizens is turned upside-down when an spaceship filled with insane alien criminals crash lands. Will their ancient hunting traditions be enough to survive this new onslaught from beyond the stars? Perhaps the two surviving prison guards of these 'humans' can help." DA DUNN DAAAHH
This doesn't sound any more like an Aliens rip-off than Predator was a rip-off of Aliens-- an alien monster is pitted against a motley crew of humans in an isolated foreign environment. Besides, given the modern association of the two franchises a parallel sequel progression would even be fitting. Then we can reboot AVP properly with ONE Alien vs. ONE Predator, and follow it up in form with Aliens vs. Predators.
"I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to GET TO THE CHOPPA!!!"
@dicksson: so true, ripley and dutch are practically carbon copies of one another right down to their genitals, their jobs, their vocabulary, and their hair. don't even get me started on how similar aliens are predators are either, i mean one is an insectoid that hunts purely on adrenalin and highly evolved instincts that hunts anything that moves and the other uses advanced tools and a intellect to outsmart their prey even going so far as to ignore targets that would not pose a challenge. the similarities are endless, i could go on for days!
@littlewade: By pulling a JJ Abrams do you mean you don't want Rodriguez to take a floundering, mishandled, and weak science fiction property and make it critically and financially viable again?
@Garrison Dean: R.O.A.C.H.: Heh. Beat me to it. Yes, it would be horrible if it ended up the #1 movie in America and brought in a whole new generation of fans.
Maybe he was worried about the lens flares? I agree, that would be bad.
