Bunnicula? I think I love you. Though to be fair, Bunnicula did have fangs. Meaning Edward Cullen is only better than a vampire rabbit by half a blood drop. Suck it, sparkle vamp. As it were.
This chart is a great idea. Every vampire movie or TV series has to have a scene near the start where someone explains that A, B and C are true, but X, Y and Z are "just Hollywood bullshit". In future a new vampire can just hold up the chart and point to where he fits in.
A few suggestions for categories: Killed by silver ("That is for Verevolves" to quote George Hamilton); Retractable/hideable fangs; Super speed/jumping (sort of like half-drop flying I suppose); and finally "has a blonde human girlfriend with a tragic past".
So many complaints, is anyone out there happy? This chart is bad ass and Julia kicked ass making it. First off we didn't include Bill and Blade with human blood, like I said before, because they don't SURVIVE off human blood. We can't include all of the traits because it's hard enough proving all these traits in separate mythology. We also can't include ALL vampires of else this list would be 2,000 vampires long. I for one am super proud of this list and stand by it. It's a great conversation starter and I'm still waiting to see if people can prove that Bram Stokers Dracula flies on his own with out any shape shifting aid. #movies
@Meredith Woerner: Actually that 2,000 vampires remark is very intriguing. Just how many are there?
Has their number gone up in line with that of the human population?
Doubled since the sixties ?
Tripled since WW2?
X what, since Vlad the Impaler's time?
Did the number start to rise geometrically at some point?
If so, when?
Someone tell us please! How long have we got? #movies
@SJ_Edwards: well you also have to take into consideration all the folk lore vampires too, zombie-esque creatures that haunted Eastern Europe...but I think vampires increase via popularity Dracula, Barabus, Buffy, Twilight these all encouraged more copy cats etc. etc. But they've always been around. #movies
@Meredith Woerner: Of course there will be complaints. "It's great" doesn't make for an interesting comment or doesn't provoke interesting discussion, doesn't it?
We're not trying to say you chart is bad because you forgot something her and there or because we don,t agree with some of your placement. We're just pointing these things out because it's fun! It's what feedback are for. You sure seem very offended by it, thus I'm sorry if anything I might have said might have offended you. I didn't mean it that way. #movies
@collex: sorry I just know how much hard work Julia put into this and I'm sally sensitive about people's hard work. Just sounds like a chorus of naysayers when we went to great pains to include a variety of popular vampires. #movies
@Meredith Woerner:
As you say, there are a huge number of folk lore vampires, and you're right, they are almost exclusively zombie-esque. Slow. Lumpen.
I guess that's one of the main things about modern 'popular' vampires, they have their roots in the tradition of Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia (aka Dracula) and the blood soaked Countess Elizabeth Bathory.
They're more cinematic.
Fast not slow. Urban not rural.
Aristocratic not peasant. Rich not poor.
Lifestyle not existence. Classy not squalid. Sexy not criminal.
I hadn't thought about it before, but that's the subtext of why Megan Fox had to eat, not drink, in Jennifer's Body. Trailer trash. Beautiful, but still trash. A vamp not a vampire. No wonder it wasn't 'popular'.
See. I learnt something from the chart. Thanks. #movies
@Meredith Woerner: You're absolutely right: this is fantastic. Which makes me think: You know, io9 ought to have a store where we can buy prints of some of your crazy charts and stuff. #movies
@SJ_Edwards: Agreed! (and i've already got it hanging on my cube wall....in case my coworkers decide to go corporate and really turn into blood-sucking creatures of the night) #movies
Gotta challenge you on Lestat and the "Religious Anxiety" question--did you forget that he wanted to be a priest originally? Or that after becoming a vampire he went to Notre Dame and demanded to know why God had let him become a monster? Or that even as a vampire he wore a cross?
On the other hand, I award you several million points for the inclusion on Bunnicula. Vampire rabbits FTW! #movies
How come when i tweet this article from this site it automatically tags #chartporn and #movies?
That is so not cool. This site is not officially off my RSS feed. Is that really how u expect to get more hits. Really now. That sucks.
@CJG: He wasn't really a fanged vampire, remember he rips them out in the intro. He's more fun! His ancestors had fangs. But he's a vegetarian. I'm not sure about that eye changing color thing, that might have been one episode I missed, or maybe not, but I really don't remember excessive eye color changing. Thanks for pointing that out tho.
This is killing me: I just heard a reference to "the three canadian vampire detective shows". I know Forever Knight and Blood Ties, but have no clue about the third. Help? #movies

Good and Evil maybe the bulllies on the block, but as John Glover more or less said in "Brimstone," Mother Nature's the real bitch. #movies
