I never knew how much early Saturns resembled '90s 300ZXes from the front - at least once you tore out the headlights and beat the hell out of 'em.

Oh Ed, you are my hero!

As a non-driver who hasn't seen as much as a snowflake in 20 years your excellently written correspondence of the harrowing adventure made me tingle in places I didn't know I had. (no, I'm not coming on to you--cutie.) If you attempt this next year I think we should all chip in to get you more betterish awesome gear AND BIG METAL SPIKES. and mebbe a flamethrower, that's allowed, right?

@Grrsn Dn: I tried that, they wouldn't allow three digit numbers, and that would also have forced me start the race in 109th position (not sure how that would've worked).

Ed, you're pleasantly modest about your driving abilities, but as someone who lives and drives in northern New York, I want to be sure that the readership here appreciates what a great job you must have done handling that car. You credit the HP:weight ratio for the speed, but if anything, that power, with front-wheel drive pulling a wagon's weight distribution, must have made that car even tougher to drive on snowcovered ice. Slinging through the corners, as you describe, takes well-honed skill. As a devoted practitioner of the handbrake turn, allow me to commend you on your driving.

@Goodnightbabytron: Thanks for the kind words, though frankly, I think the gymnastic maneuver of flinging my 6', 200-something pound self out the passenger window was by far the most impressive thing I accomplished all day!

I'm digging the picture where you can see the photographers shadow. For reals, though, thats pretty metal. I hope you don't wake up in twenty years and regret doing it as you lie in bed clutching your back/neck/knee.

    Happy New Year!

@ThisDudeRufus: It was very metal, except for the parts that were fiberglass or plastic (ha!). Next year's car will be the Diomobile.

Holy crap, awesome job, Ed, too bad about the end result, but at least it made for a pretty damn great "war story" for all of us to enjoy. I hope this is not the last we hear of Io9's destructive automotive endeavours!

I had, in fact, been wondering what was to come of this project; I must have missed whatever last posts gave us updates.

@ldevitt: Because, as we all know, this is going to be a holiday film, and Will Smith is the shoe-in for the feel-good holiday film, whilst Shia and Bale are relegated to the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganzas.

@Smeagol92055: Actually, I'd like to see Bale do it. Considering his work on The Machinist, he'd have to spend eight months sitting on his couch eating pizza and wings to take on the role of me.

Hm, I wrote captions for all the photos, but they aren't showing up. The guy in photo #40 bought the wrecked car from me for $10. For some reason, I find that picture hilarious.
