    I've read one Sherri S. Tepper novel and it came off as a thinly veiled attack against religion. I'm an atheist, but I wasn't entertained. If you have an ax to grind, don't do it disguised as a novel.

    OK, pelt me now, but I think Stephenson is just OK. Working my way through the Baroque Cycle, and I'm just heh about it.

    @Zidel333: Go put that down and go read Cryptonomican and Snow Crash right now! And then read Anathem! I honestly thought that Stephenson mildly derailed somewhat with the Baroque Cycle, esp. after the first book. Anathem redeemed him in my book.

    @crashedpc: Really? I'm kinda relieved because the blogosphere is like "Stephenson is omigosh amazing!" and just wasn't seeing it with the Baroque Cycle. I'll keep reading now, although I was certainly tempted to just give up before.

    @Evil Tortie's Mom: As much as I still enjoy Snow Crash it may not have aged very well. It was originally conceived as a parody of the cyberpunk movement; but in the end, at least in my humble opinion, managed to surpass many of those sorts of novels. Still, it feels very much like a 1990s cyberpunk book.

    Stephenson is a tough sell even to the most over-educated rabid SF fans. I'm a huge admirer of his work but wouldn't fault anyone who just can't get into it.

    'Anathem' was excellent. I really want to read 'Song of Time,' but even for a junkie like me, approx. $70 U.S. is just too much, even for a 1st edition hardcover, award nominations not withstanding.

    I was reading the wikipedia page on Sheri Tepper, and it turns out she worked most of her adult life at Planned Parenthood - where she wrote a series of pamphlets that sound incredibly awesome. Now I want to get my hands on Tepper's Planned Parenthood pamphlets. Just check out their titles: * "The People Know", 1968

    * "The Perils of Puberty", 1974

    * "The Problem with Puberty", 1976

    * "This Is You", 1977

    * "So Your Happily Ever After Isn't, 1977

    Depends on the ever-fluctuating definition of Science Fiction, I guess. Wasn't the Civil War in Man in the Dark just a framing device, one of his story within two other story things?

    I could see In the Country of Last Things, maybe Mr. Vertigo as Sci Fi, but it's a stretch.
