Freddie Highmore of Willy Wonka fame will be lending his voice to the upcoming animated version of Astro Boy set to arrive in theaters next year, and we wonder why they chose a 16-year-old with an English accent to play the titular hero. Director: Smurfs Rock Harder Than Astro Boy
The CGI movie of Astro Boy has run into trouble: director Colin Brady has abandoned the project, in favor of The Smurfs movie. In his place, Imagi Studios has hired David Bowers (Flushed Away). Imagi's previous project was last year's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot. Warner Bros. and the Weinstein Co. are still hoping to distribute Astro Boy in 2009. Osamu Tezuka (1928-1989), creator of Astro Boy and over 700 manga series, is often called the God of Comics or the Disney of the East. But neither title acknowledges the mark he's left on science fiction. If you don't know who he is, then you should get to know him — now. For decades, Tezuka's works weren't accessible to the non-Japanese-reading public. NBC aired over half of the Astro Boy anime series in the sixties, but the original manga wasn't published in English until 2002. At last, a handful of publishers is actively translating and releasing some of Tezuka's lesser known titles into English. One of the best is Apollo's Song, published in English for the first time a few months ago by Vertical Inc. Its an elegant, compact representation of Tezuka's scifi genius — and a milestone in Japanese free expression due to its frank depiction of sexuality in a postapocalyptic world.

Astro Boy Will Be "Dark Pinocchio" Story Of Robot Violence
The animated Astro Boy movie, due out in 2009, will be a gorgeous and painterly homage to Hiyao Miyazaki and early George Lucas, director Colin Brady tells FirstShowing.net. This "dark Pinocchio" story (about a robot who can never become human) will feature hardcore robot-on-robot violence. And judging from the first concept art, it'll be gorgeous. Says Brady:We will present Astro's story as more of an epic Sci Fi fantasy. Although Astro is a robot, there's a deep dark human struggle that we're exploring.
