I think it's great they brought Yates back. Honestly, though, "least expected" said to me either Romana I who quit rather suddenly, or Romana II who was played by his now ex-wife.
This would be taking place right before the Key to Time season, right? I think that followed Leela's departure. As for K-9, I keep forgetting which one was left with who when and what number we're on.
Mark I was left with Leela. Mark II was in a box in the TARDIS at the end of the season. And the next season started with The Ribos Operation, the first part of The Key to Time.
Oh, this is so exciting! I haven't listened to more than one or two of the radio plays (I always *intend* to track down more) but this will be way motivational.
@Evil Tortie's Mom: R.O.A.C.H.: My one-time ball room dance partner loves them, but I can't quite buy into it for much the same reasons as you cite. (But although she likes fantasy and historical fiction, she didn't like JONATHAN STRANGE AND MR. NORRELL, which was the best book I read that year, so go figure.)
@Grey_Area: It's a little disorienting watching Tom Baker in "The Hound of the Baskervilles." He's very much Sherlock Holmes ninety-five percent of the time, then he gives that trademark Tom Baker grin and the illusion is shattered.
@Grey_Area: You can probably thank Basil Rathbone for 70% of your Holmes visualization, and the other 30% on that guy from PBS. Anyone who doesn't look like either of those guys doesn't "Look" like Holmes.
@John: Rathbone and Jeremy Brett did fulfill the image of Holmes that Doyle described, but the illustrations by Sidney Pachet are the real deal. The forthcoming movie will be a lot of fun and all, but Robert Downey Jr. will never be my image of Holmes. Heck, he's only, what, 4'12"?
@Grey_Area: I am so conflicted about the new movie. It will either be the greatest thing ever or unspeakably awful. Sherlock Holmes and Robert Downey Jr are just two completely different kinds of hot.
Now if someone cast Hugh Laurie, then we'd be talking.
@Elizabeth Weinbloom: I'm going to watch it as a parody or something. Downey and Jude Law are both great and I'm sure the ramped-up action and jokey bits will be very entertaining.
Hugh Laurie? He'd be great, House already is sort of a Holmesian homage. Didja notice his address is 221B? Not that I ever watch that show...
@Grey_Area: The creators of HOUSE admit up front that they wanted to make a medical drama of Holmseian sensibilities, so it's no accident. They originally cast Wilson (? the oncologist) as his Watson, but it turned out to work better when House having a team of assistants.
@MaryRobinette: You're welcome! It's a great story. And I'm working on doing a podcast of my fiction and stuff, and it was a good example of how to do it well.
@Charlie Jane Anders: As you are no doubt aware, there is excellent advice for doing readings and voice recordings on her website thingy. I look forward to hearing your work as you too have a lovely voice.
Once I can figure out this audible signal transmission cable thingamajig, that is.
I saw the mellifluous Ms. Kowal reading with John Scalzi last month, great show! She's a puppeteer as well. Sadly, I can't figure out how to make sound come out of this particular computer. I am dumb.

Her contemporary and non-Holmes stuff is quite good, though.
