why stormtroopers are bad for you
They were the result of cloning a bounty hunter to create a mindless, obedient army beloved by millions... But is there a hidden dark side to the soldiers of the dark side? One blogger feels that there's something very wrong indeed about America's unspoken love of the Stormtrooper.

Are Stormtroopers Making America Safe For Fascists?

Will.I.Am Discusses How He'll Destroy Wolverine Single-Handed
Meet the undoing of the next movie. A founding member of The Black Eyed Peas has been cast as a non-cowboy cowboy from Texas in the X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie. In an interview with MTV Will.I.Am describes his powers explaining, "I'm a teleporter. ... I'm here, I'm there, I'm everywhere. Boom, boom, boom!" Click through for Will.I.Am's full description of this new character. More »Crappy Movies Are Destroying Your Brain, Say Scientists
You already knew that watching movies like Jumper or the Planet of the Apes remake makes your brain hurt, but now neuroscientists have proof. When you watch a great movie, your brain marches in lockstep with the brains of the other viewers. Terrible movies invoke synaptic chaos. Could filmmakers use this knowledge to create movies that intentionally tap into your neural responses? More »The Grimly Grim Hallmark Of Awfully Bad Writing
Classic science fiction novels have many annoying writing tics that make it hard to enjoy them, but the word "grimly" has always seemed the worst. People are always speaking grimly, or staring grimly, or even smiling grimly. Of all the adverbs that attach themselves, like alien facehuggers, to science fiction prose, "grimly" is the worst — and the most unnecessary. And it's still cropping up all the time. More »

The 7 Types Of Bad Bosses According To Star Trek (And How To Survive Them)
They yell at you and fire you twice a day. They insist that a five-day job should only take five hours. They flip-flop and then blame you for their mistakes. Star Trek's captains model all kinds of bad boss behavior, but luckily they also show us what to do with a boss who's out of touch with reality. A person known as Caveman Robot is the curator of a blog called "Bad Spock Drawings," which boasts the fittingly ungrammatical subtitle "Artist Are Asked to Make a Bad Spock Drawing!" And yes, the drawings submitted by "artist" are quite bad. For some reason, Spock seems to be at his worst when strumming an instrument, though there are also an inordinate number of pictures where Spock's face seems covered in boogers or pimples. You won't be able to look away from this collection, especially when there are such clearly-stated criteria for submitting your own drawing. Turns out that the hard science underpinning Splice, a forthcoming flick about genetic engineering directed by Vincenzo "Cube" Natali, is actually not so hard. In a recent interview, the director claims his inspiration to do a genetic chimera movie was seeing a now-famous image of a mouse with a human ear grafted onto its back. "It was such a crazy, shocking weird image that I was inspired to write a story about genetic splicing," he said. Unfortunately, what he saw wasn't genetic splicing at all. Frank Henelotter, the exploitation genius who brought you Frankenhooker, Brain Damage, and the Basket Case trilogy, is finally showing his new flick, Bad Biology, at film festivals. At the Philadelphia Film Festival, where Bad Biology premiered, Henenlotter told the audience that his goal was to make a movie that was "just wrong." Henenlotter fan Shepard Wong posted about the plot of this movie, which will lay to rest the question of what can come next after Brian Yuzna already brought you a zombie penis vs. zombie rat fight. Bad Movie Physics: A Report Card
Space epics almost always play fast and loose with science, treating the laws of physics like suggestions. Sound in space, unprotected bodies splatting in vacuum, and alien planets that all look just like Calabasas. But some movies dismember Newton and Einstein with way more gusto than others. We rated 18 movies based on how many laws of physics they mangled, and here's our report card. More »

A Survival Guide to Bad Scifi Movies
If you have ever willingly or unwillingly sought out science fiction in the movie theater, you know what dangers await. Sure, you may find yourself blown away by a 28 Days Later, but you might just as easily find yourself rolling your eyes through a Jumper or Transformers. But even if you do find yourself having to watch Hayden Christensen in front of a green screen, there is hope. Here to deliver the good news about surviving bad scifi movies is Sherilyn Connelly, who has for years been a ringleader of the weekly Bad Movie Night at San Francisco's Dark Room. She worked with her Bad Movie Night colleagues* to come up with a few ways you can turn a horrible movie experience into one the whole theater will enjoy. More »

Ben Affleck Sees The Future, So You Don't Have To
"If you show someone their future, they have no future." That's the wisdom of Ben Affleck, in this bizarre clip from Paycheck, the movie that bounced. Apparently if you can look into the future, you turn everybody into soulless mall kids, with no purpose. And your attempts to prevent future catastrophes will always cause those catastrophes to happen, because... uhhhh... Hey, it's Uma Thurman with really bad hair! (Wig? You decide.) More details, and another Paycheck clip, below. More »

Ultra-Bright X-Ray Machine in Danger
Next time a scientist in the United States wants to use an ultrapowerful x-ray machine (pictured here) to aid pharmaceutical development, or the nation's biggest particle accelerator to study neutrinos, it may be impossible. The Argonne and Fermilab facilities in Illinois, two of the United States' most important national laboratories, are about to suffer funding cuts so deep that Fermilab reports it may have to lay off 10 percent of its science staff. This could seriously damage the future of physics and chemistry research in the U.S. More »

Back To What Future?
This "ouch I can't believe they did that" clip showcases everything that's wrong with Back To the Future 2. It's a shot-for-shot reprise of a sequence from the first movie, where Michael J. Fox gets away from some bullies. Except this time, he uses a "hoverboard" and hitches a ride with a flying car. In other words, the future looks just like the past, except with a little pixie dust. That's why the sequel's future isn't as thrilling as the original's past. More »

What if Sony Really Did Have Corporate DNA?
Synthetic biologist and science blogger Keith Robison is sick of seeing advertising campaigns for companies that say "such-and-such is in our corporate DNA." So he strikes back by explaining what it REALLY means for you to have something in your DNA. The results are hilarious.
