THE FLY, THE WIZARD OF OZ, THE MALTESE FALCON, BEN-HUR, THE THREE MUSKETEERS (Richard Lester version), THE THING, THE LORD OF THE RINGS, THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS (Michael Mann version), SUPERMAN: THE MOTION PICTURE, BATMAN, BATMAN BEGINS, SPIDER-MAN, THE HORROR OF DRACULA (1958), DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1932) version, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, etc. Heck, even Hitchcock remade one of his own movies . . . .
At this point the only thing less original than Hollywood are boringly predictable complaints that Hollywood has run out of ideas. :)
Seriously, do we have to have this same discussion everytime a new remake is announced?

i'll give you partial credit for the fly, though goldblum is no vincent price. and carpenters the thing is certainly a better and scarier film than the original with james arness running around looking like a carrot. still not a greatly convincing list of better films. but hey, don't let me rain on your easily pleased parade. you go save your allowance and get in line for land of the lost, g.i. joe, transformers and what not. i'll keep cheering for fresh ideas and original voices. enjoy your product placements.

Do your homework. The 1939 version of THE WIZARD OF OZ was a remake; there had been several previous film versions of Baum's novel. And the the classic John Huston version of THE MALTESE FALCON was actually the *third* movie version of the novel. Hollywood has been remaking movies since the silent era, and doing multiple adaptations of classic stories and characters.
A sense of historical perspective does not make one "easily pleased." It's been forty years since the last adaptation of BARBARELLA. Why not one more?
It worked for Zorro, and Tarzan, and Sherlock HOlmes . . .

Yeah, a bunch of the junk folks are remaking is stupid because the original was stupid. Some stories are worth exploring again. Barbarella? Does it matter really?

it really does not need a remake at all.
