Just leave the character alone. No one really wants to see a darker take on the character. People like camp and trying to make something campy is worse. Genuine campy is something unintentional.

Well, the Jane Fonda movie wasn't all that great a representation of the original European comics character; perhaps there's a major Jean-Claude Forest fan hiding somewhere in Hollywood who has *really good* blackmail material.
yeah they're taking this too seriously. robert rodriguez would've directed the crap out of that movie, but now it's the legally blonde dude and monster-in-law screenwriters? like, is barbarella a romantic comedy? I hope there ain't any interested studios for this mix.
@lectricsheep: Yeah but Robert Rodriguez wanted his girlfriend Rose McGowan to be the star and the studios refused to go along. I'm assuming that's why he is no longer directing the movie.
Who says it will be a "pale and inferior echo?" I can think of lots of remakes that are as good or better than the original versions.
THE FLY, THE WIZARD OF OZ, THE MALTESE FALCON, BEN-HUR, THE THREE MUSKETEERS (Richard Lester version), THE THING, THE LORD OF THE RINGS, THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS (Michael Mann version), SUPERMAN: THE MOTION PICTURE, BATMAN, BATMAN BEGINS, SPIDER-MAN, THE HORROR OF DRACULA (1958), DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1932) version, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, etc. Heck, even Hitchcock remade one of his own movies . . . .
At this point the only thing less original than Hollywood are boringly predictable complaints that Hollywood has run out of ideas. :)
Seriously, do we have to have this same discussion everytime a new remake is announced?
@MinervaAlpaca: the wizard of oz? someone improved on the 1939 classic, who knew? and of course the john huston directed classic, the maltese falcon starring humphrey bogart was bettered by... um, sorry. but then yeah, lord of the rings you could sort of make a case for. after all ralph bakshi did a half baked version of part of the trilogy that was released after the money plug was pulled. so a mediocre animated flop was improved upon by an enormous budget and thirty years of digital advancement. which isn't to negate the absolute passion to achieve what most had thought was a cinematic impossibility. and i am sure that there is a driving passion, a need to remake the iconic barbarella.
i'll give you partial credit for the fly, though goldblum is no vincent price. and carpenters the thing is certainly a better and scarier film than the original with james arness running around looking like a carrot. still not a greatly convincing list of better films. but hey, don't let me rain on your easily pleased parade. you go save your allowance and get in line for land of the lost, g.i. joe, transformers and what not. i'll keep cheering for fresh ideas and original voices. enjoy your product placements.
Do your homework. The 1939 version of THE WIZARD OF OZ was a remake; there had been several previous film versions of Baum's novel. And the the classic John Huston version of THE MALTESE FALCON was actually the *third* movie version of the novel. Hollywood has been remaking movies since the silent era, and doing multiple adaptations of classic stories and characters.
A sense of historical perspective does not make one "easily pleased." It's been forty years since the last adaptation of BARBARELLA. Why not one more?
It worked for Zorro, and Tarzan, and Sherlock HOlmes . . .
@MinervaAlpaca: I'll add the 70's version of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers. Should the world have been satisfied with the Fankenstein done in 1913 by Edison? I'm rather glad of the James Whale version with Boris Karloff but am looking forward to del Toro's version. And don't make me choose between Nosferatu>, the 1931 Dracula, or the Hammer versions with Peter Cushing.
Yeah, a bunch of the junk folks are remaking is stupid because the original was stupid. Some stories are worth exploring again. Barbarella? Does it matter really?

it really does not need a remake at all.

No need for a reboot.
