I've been watching a lot of "How the Earth Was Made" lately, and I've come to the conclusion that geology is teh awesome.

crystallization, the process of formation of solid crystals from a solution or melt, both confuses and infuriates me!

Wow, that's incredible. Can meteors have volcanos on them?

@RedSciFiChick: Probably not, though they can come from volcanoes on other planets or moons.

@Annalee Newitz: I'm just imagining a micrometeorite with volcanism. It would have a tiny island, with tiny people. They would sing tiny songs and dance tiny dances. Then they hit atmo.

How do they find such tiny rocks different from others in those places? Are they scanning all over the place and suddenly spot a different reading?

I'm not surprised that there are minor differences - The sample would be affected by the root materials when it formed - basalts around the world are always slightly different, based on its location.

And because somebody had to say something Lovecrafty on a post about strange rocks found in the polar region:

Was the meteorite shaped like a five-pointed star?

@Mount_Prion: No, but it was a green soap stony thing. Not sure if it's important, but dogs also seem to hate it - they bark and howl if it's near, acting restlessly.
