Unless this is a vacuum toilet, this fails for me. It makes sense if it uses the steam built pressure to suck the number 1 and 2 away, but if that's not the purpose then it fails in many ways. You should not steampunk just b/c you can.
Never really understand the fascination of romanticizing old technology. It wasn't really all that good in the first place otherwise we'd still be using it.
@ManchuCandidate: Although, really, the toilet is one piece of technology that hasn't changed all that much since its invention. It's just water-pressure and valves.
On the other hand, I can see (for some things) liking the steampunk aesthetic. For instance, I have this keyboard that I type on, and I would definitely like something that felt substantial under my hands, for when I get the apoplexy.

@ManchuCandidate: i don't belive stempunk or teslapunk or whatever the crazy kids are calling it these days is romanticising old technology nearly as much as it is a romanticising of a bygone eras ideas of what the future would look like. cyberpunk is very much the same thing only the era is the 80's and 90's. the fallout series is another excellent example of a the future world rendered through the eyes of the sci-fi of the 50's and 60's. someday, in 20-30 years, i imagine there will be conventions for FTLpunk or holopunk about the current generations ideas of what the future would look like.
@braak: You and your apoplexy! Calm down... have some espresso... that I brewed using my STEAMPUNK ESPRESSO MAKER MWAHAHA wait, technically espresso is made with a bunch of steam, right? Rendering this entire thing moot?
I don't know what that sign at the top of the page is from, but ZZ is male and ZW is female. Unless they're trying to get some hot human on alien action going then um... whoops?
@Luziphir: Those signs were put up at the Los Angeles WorldCon back in 2006. I've got photos of them myself. I don't know if they were promoting anything, or if they were just for the funny.
@Luziphir: Just to clarify, ZZ/ZW is the actual sex determination system in birds and some insects so it's not like they just came up with some random letters, they were going for something based on reality and either fucked it up or did it intentionally to avoid confusing morons who failed high school biology. Either way that's kind of annoying >:(
A slight correction, even though I really hate to sound like some sort of hyper-offended fanboy, but the brig toilet was seen in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, not The Undiscovered Country.
@Zapp Brannigan's Girdle: I noticed the brig toilet in ST V too. It was pretty conventional. It looks like what they use in a jail or prison today. My friends and I used to joke about the toilets on Star Trek. A ship the size of the Enterprise would have to have a LOT of toilets. Come to think of it, I don't think I saw a toilet in any episodes of the original series.
Wonder where's the bathroom on the TARDIS, if it even has one! Though it has to since it has all those rooms we haven't seen in the new series...except the wardrobe room.
What about Spaceballs? The toilets may not have been futuristic, but the video conference screens above them were pretty awesome... though it would be hard to conference with them while blasting a dookie.

there is no word for an espresso made with steam instead of pressurized hot water other than 'burnt' or possibly 'abomination.'

Nah, that's not really true - sometimes the technology in common use today is inferior to older tech.
No commonly available modern desk telephone is nearly as good as a push-button Western Electric rental instrument from the '70s, for example.
I'm a fan of the market, but it doesn't always provide the best possible products.

Starbuck staring/glaring at me while she pees is disturbing mostly because I prefer not to make eye contact while pissing.
