Kevin Smith produced and played a part in Clerks, a full movie, albeit black and white and non-action, for less than $30,000. It won a Sundance Award.

Robert Rodriguez produced, shot and scored El Mariachi, a full time, action packed movie which won a Sundance Award, for $7,000.

Sandy Collora made a mediocre short fan film, spent most of his attention on costumes, and filmed what? Two fights and a dialogue? For $30,000.

And let's face it, the only good thing you can say about the film was that it pitted a threeway crossover and that the costumes were good.

I saw World's Finest, and Grayson, and I have to say the only good thing Collora has is having the -wow this character is finally on screen- effect.

You can't make a full movie just with cool cameos.

@Annalee Newitz: Kevin smith spent less than $30K on "Clerks" and has a hugely successful career. This guy sounds like he squandered a lot of time, money and good will on projects that would lead nowhere.

If he wanted to have fun and make some cool fan films, good on him. But thinking that will get you a career in filmmaking is akin to thinking your sweetass tattoo will land you a gallery opening.

How on earth is that Aaron guy a rival? His filmmaking in Dark Justice looks extremely amateur when compared to Dead End. No sane person would choose his work over Sandy's.

@Polybius: Well, his fan film was going to be shown alongside Collora's at the 2004 Con. Maybe he figured he'd get more time in the limelight if he came out with that story about Warners consulting him.

George Lucas is one of the few people in the industry who welcomes fan films. He actually has an annual award for the best fan films. I believe he realizes the valuable asset his fans are. They give him money to make movies. Then they spend money to make their own movies based on the material he owns. Must be nice to have fans who throw money at you all the time.

@joetato: but it seems to me that most of the SW fans that make these films understand that Lucas could shut them down at any time.

I don't know that I can feel anything for Collora...he was using IP that wasn't his, how one feels about current copyright laws isn't relevant.

@goldfarb: Everyone making fan films knows that you can get shut down at any point. And Star Trek let's New Beginnings get produced. Most fan filmmakers understand that you cannot make money off of someone else's IP, they either do it for 'love' or to get discovered. Warner's problem with World's Finest wasn't its existence, but any attempt to make money off of it.

I feel for the guy and all but Batman: Dead End was pretty horrible. Plus he was delusional to think making films with such famous IP w/o permission would be tolerated.

@Annalee Newitz: It was definitely great from a spec short position. I'm surprised he never got any solid offers. You'd think he'd be able to direct an action TV episode or something else on the low end professional scale. Well now he's gonna have an indie feature in his belt. Hopefully that'll get him more work.
