or was it a joke on Bill Shatner's inabillity to say the word? that was my guess, and i find it hillarious!

    sabataaage!

So it had nothing at all to do with a snub or in-joke regarding William Shatner's pronunciation of the word "sabotage"?

If the Beastie Boys and their music exist in the Star Trek universe, isn't Kirk going to be floored one day to find that they sang about him and his crew?

@aubreyf: Probably safe to assume that the "Last Action Hero Principal" will be in effect. They would probably end up singing about Boba Fett or Martin Landau.

@Chimaera: Oh, excellent! I was talking with a friend and that's what we figured. Either that or someone time traveled back to the 20th century (in Star Trek this rarely happens!) and met up with The Beastie Boys.

Sabotage is a great choice for the mood of the particular scene, also it makes sense that Kirk would listen to older & more exciting & (sort of) rebellious music rather than boring 24th century contemporary. I was far more put off by the Nokia advert in the same scene... #startrek

@scifigene: What's wrong with a little product placement, even if the product doesn't exist yet? Nobody seemed to mind the Nokia 'Tube' 5800XM prototype seen in The Dark Knight... #startrek

@scifigene: It makes Kirk a geeky nerd. The kind of 23rd Century person who would listen to the Beastie Boys and other music from the late 20th Century is exactly the type of person who today listens to Pachelbel, Handel, and Bach. Then again I listen to Corvus Corax, so what do I know? #startrek

@Bill-Lee: Not really. Everyone seemed to dig 20th century and pre-20th century stuff (on printed paper, even) to the exclusion of whatever's popular in the 23rd/24th centuries. I also remembered that TNG episode about the human boy raised in an alien society listening to its music, which sounded like heavy metal and was considered barbaric.

I have seen the future, and it is very, very bland.

How about this: "Sabotage" was used in the Star Trek film because "Sabotage" is an awesome fucking song. The end. #startrek
