The thing with mixing all those stories, LOTR, Star Wars etc. had to do with the central theme in this film; imagination. Isn't the idea with D&D that you can imagine anything? (I'm really asking, as I know squat about D&D...). So yeah that felt like a part of the story rather than something out of place.
But yes I understand what you're saying about the LOTR and Star Wars jokes seeming kind of old... but why should it matter WHEN they were released, or how many times they've been spoofed, as long as the new spoofer does it in an original way. And Futurama ALWAYS deliver in the category "original ways".
I thought this was way funnier than TBWBB, which had a plot that I felt was kinda loose. But so far none of the movies has really let me down!

I guess I didn't see Fry turning into Gollum or everyone in LOTR garb climbing up the side of a mountain as new idea, no matter what one-liner Bender is telling. Its been done to death on SNL, South Park, late nights, spoofy movies, you tubbery etc. Props for making Leela a centaur tho.
I know everyone hated BWTBB but me, but at least the whole David Cross alien dating the whole world was an interesting idea that we haven't seen 1,000 times and kind of funny. But hey to each their own.

Actually I thought BWTBB was the strongest of the three also. I thought the whole Yeevo story was genuinely unique and a lot of fun.

They could have done better, but I'm happy to see ANY new Futurama.

That he was there for another reason. That seemed stupid IMHO.
Also the whole crew showering scene didn't really seem to fit either due to the fact that Fry didn't seem to be phased at all by both Amy and Leela being naked next to him.

Yeah, that shower scene was very left field. It was so downplayed that I thought it might be a reference to something, but I think not.
