You're all wrong. I just got the torrent while I was at work (thanks winvnc!) and I'm watching it now. It's awesome. Scott Bacula run into a wall by George Takai? The Dixie Chicks blob? It's golden. Just because you may or may not like a different episode more, don't go all spoiled and crap on a funny movie.
What? I thought it was the best! And I'm not into fantasy that much, either.
The thing with mixing all those stories, LOTR, Star Wars etc. had to do with the central theme in this film; imagination. Isn't the idea with D&D that you can imagine anything? (I'm really asking, as I know squat about D&D...). So yeah that felt like a part of the story rather than something out of place.
But yes I understand what you're saying about the LOTR and Star Wars jokes seeming kind of old... but why should it matter WHEN they were released, or how many times they've been spoofed, as long as the new spoofer does it in an original way. And Futurama ALWAYS deliver in the category "original ways".
I thought this was way funnier than TBWBB, which had a plot that I felt was kinda loose. But so far none of the movies has really let me down!
@MrThunderfield: I guess I thought that if you can imagine anything then they shouldn't imagine the same SW and LOTR jokes that have been done to death. The only truly original jokes in this movie were outside of the realm of fantasy. They had a light saber fight that ended with an "i'm your father moment" I can't count how many of those jokes we've gone through. I have no problem with the D&D what not, but the LOTR humor was exhausting. I would have rather them spoofed Dark Crystal at least that would have been different. But that being said what WAS new was very interesting.
I guess I didn't see Fry turning into Gollum or everyone in LOTR garb climbing up the side of a mountain as new idea, no matter what one-liner Bender is telling. Its been done to death on SNL, South Park, late nights, spoofy movies, you tubbery etc. Props for making Leela a centaur tho.
I know everyone hated BWTBB but me, but at least the whole David Cross alien dating the whole world was an interesting idea that we haven't seen 1,000 times and kind of funny. But hey to each their own.
@sugardeath: Yes it was. David Cross has been doing a ton of awesome scifi voice work. He was also this adorable little robot in Terra. He's by far and away one of my favorite comics, plus his voice is surprisingly really endearing.
I saw this last night and let me agree, I found it slow. Generally I liked it, but "The Beath with a Billion Backs" had a better story and was funnier. The whole "Dungeons and Dragons" thing was pointless. I don't mean pointless in the "I just didn't like it" way, but in the "it did nothing to forward the plot" way. If anything, it just gave us a bunch of generic geek references.
They could have done better, but I'm happy to see ANY new Futurama.
I will say this... I think the writers messed up.... Lord Nibler, according to a pervious episode, )i think the one with the Brain Dome, idk). He said that He would goto Virgon 6 and wait for Leela becuase he knew they would come... and NOW... they are saying..
That he was there for another reason. That seemed stupid IMHO.
Also the whole crew showering scene didn't really seem to fit either due to the fact that Fry didn't seem to be phased at all by both Amy and Leela being naked next to him.
@Evlsushi: At first I was thought...ooooh funny Starship Troopers reference but then they didn't do anything with it...at all. Total misuse of coed shower moment.
I just wish that they would stop charging more for a movie length DVD than they charge for entire seasons of the show. Maybe then I would be more inclined to actually buy the DVDs.
i loved it when the idiots at the box network were killed.
i will never understand why they didnt put futurama after the simpsons on sunday nights, they would have had 1 hour of loyal fans watching 2 great shows
@evildead1971: Because they didn't understand it. They hated The Simpsons, but they understood it. More importantly, they understood that it made them truckloads of bank, so they couldn't ever cancel it. Futurama, on the other hand, wasn't the proverbial 800 pound gorilla, so someone with power rigged the results (i.e. putting it in the timeslot that always got preempted by football, and never promoting it _at_all_) to make it very easy to justify cancellation.

Actually I thought BWTBB was the strongest of the three also. I thought the whole Yeevo story was genuinely unique and a lot of fun.

I thought BWTBB was good too. Definitely better than Big Score.

Yeah, that shower scene was very left field. It was so downplayed that I thought it might be a reference to something, but I think not.
