One not mentioned but worth checking out if you want a fun story about a girl who whenever she falls asleep she finds herself in an extremely realistic American Revolution setting that may or may not be real. It's a little girly but I am absoulutely in love with The Dreamer. It started as a web comic here:
Ooh, King City looks and reads AMAZING. I might just pick it up, and I don't really read comics other than Calvin & Hobbes.. #5comicsyoushouldbereading
@bibble3000: Even more important, what does it say about the artist? I can almost hear his mocking voice..."Ha! Not only is man extinct but pigs will fornicate where you once took your kids to frolic." #alexisrockman
These remind me of the site of the 1964 World's Fair (known to many of you as those spindly spaceship things from Men in Black). 50-year-old decaying World's Fair remnants have a definite post-apocalyptic Disney World vibe going on. #alexisrockman
@Elizabeth Weinbloom: Even more so, the imagined remnants of the ones that once were, but are now 'never-was'.
The magnificent Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939-1940 is perhaps the most poignant example [en.wikipedia.org] .
A bucolic, lowrise, sun-dappled internationalist embassy, heralding a Gibsonian Gernsback Continuum utopia of streamamerica Art Deco (fascist-free) futurism, set on the shores of an endless Pacific Ocean.
Where weightless Zeppelins moor to the masts of gleaming Nirosta-capped skyscrapers, noiseless helicopters flit the pellucid skies and cheery crimson biplanes commute the verdant suburbs and concrete canyons of the endless modernist megalopoli to come.
PS I don't know if I subconciously recognised your name en passant [I tend not to notice monikers (just colours and shapes)], but for once I bothered to click an ID, saw the twitter link and realised that you're on my following list (since a witty #1stdraftmoveiline in July, I think).
Big planet. Small world.
PPS Any photos of that ethereal bubble-blowing flash mob? #alexisrockman
I was reading Air up until some stupid flying machine showed up, at which point I gave up.
Resurrection is completely awesome, though I do kind of miss the old artist...
A book I cannot recommend more is CHEW, over at Image. It's such a great story, with a lot of interesting threads, fun art, and great characters. One of the the most fun I've had reading a comic book in YEARS.
Also, BPRD: 1947, if just for the combination of Fabio Moon's art, and Gabriel Ba, two of the best artists in the business (IMHO). #5comicsyoushouldbereading
@PVIII: I have the exact experience. Once Air started looking like something out of early 70s Mad (or, candidly, King City, which suffers the same problems in art and conception) it lost me
Big fan of Chew as well, but, speaking of Gabriel Ba, am perhaps most anxious (hoping?) to see the third arc of the Umbrella Academy. #5comicsyoushouldbereading
@thufir_hawat: Ah, aren't we all! I think Way has his hands full with touring, so it might be awhile. But man, is that book always worth the wait!
I also had a big problem with Air's art. It was very flat, and as you say, 70s Mad. Would've really benefited from a more surreal artist (like Weldele or Jock or something...).
Glad to see I'm not the only one who likes CHEW! I'm sure it'll be a movie or TV show soon enough (really has all the trappings)...not that it's necessarily a good thing. #5comicsyoushouldbereading
I read a preview of Air somewhere (in the back of a Fables comic, maybe?), and thought it sounded fascinating. I'll have to go pick up those collections. #5comicsyoushouldbereading
