we hold out vain hope that he'll also rework the theme song just to make the hardcore fanboys' heads explode.
Fortunately, the Doctor Who theme is one that is REALLY hard to mess up.
Believe me I've listen to alot of remixes and they're not bad. They range from classical to heavy metal versions
"we hold out vain hope that he'll also rework the theme song just to make the hardcore fanboys' heads explode."
I like the cut of your jib.
See, fans talk about the Doctor Who people biting the hands that feeds them, but that's because they don't realise that the hardcore fans are not actually the hand that feeds. It's the other hand, the ten million or so people who are not SF fans, but just people who watch the telly; the people who tuned in because they liked Catherine Tate; soap fans; Kylie fans; and most of all the hordes of kids who got their mums and dads to buy them Cybermen masks ans Dalek helmets, in order to terrorise the cat.
It's not a show for fans. It's a show for the general British public.
I think Mike Skinner is a brilliant lyricist, by the way. I suspect his ability to inhabit characters might translate to a decent performance.
@SimonMay: ... but they already did rework the theme song. They generally do it at least once for every doctor. Its nothing new. That's why its that kicky rock mix now for Tennant. Unless you're suggesting that they literally dump it and replace it with something totally different, which would be stupid because as it stands the basic structure is both iconic and amazingly catchy.
I mean, completely replacing the opening music with some random pop music would be, like, having a Star Trek intro based around a poor man's aerosmith song.
... oh wait...
This is my one point of old fan-new fan chauvinism. I have met people who were, more or less, Rose Tyler fans as opposed to Doctor Who fans.
I think that the idea companions come and go doesn't quite sit well to a lot of people. SJS' reappearance was well-played by highlighting the fact, but the Doctor, as a rule, could be pretty brutal, or at least cold. I don't think that sits as well with the new audience.
The Jessica Hynes bit is no rumor. There are plenty of photos and set reports confirming that she plays 'Verity Newman,' the granddaughter of the character in "Family of Blood" who has adapted John Smith's journal into a work of popular fiction entitled "A Journal of Impossible Things."
Much as I never want to see Rose again (and think it's far too soon to bring back Donna either), I'm okay with the big companion wank-fest on this special occasion, provided it's just 10 telling Verity about various events that occurred in his past... possibly in a "No, no, no... you got that bit totally wrong. This is how it really happened!" sort of way.
While this seems like a rather fond way to bid farewell to an excellent Doctor, I am going to be a little bit pissed if we get a massive 2hr finale where the Doctor sits around in a bookstore reliving some of his greatest adventures, then reveals that he's dying of McGuffin poisoning, and that he wanted to spend the last remaining hours of his regeneration with his "granddaughter"... rather than using that time to do something sensible, like seek medical help.
So this cricism is not about The Doctor making repeated trips to Earth's past, it's about past characters dropping in time and again after they've been given the boot.
Totally agree that Donna was the best companion. I did not like the way they let her go, she grew as a person, learned to stand up for herself and was actually happy! Then they go and wipe all of that away - and if she does come back won't she die or something? Was she not supposed to know anything that happened or her head would explode?
I like Billie Piper but enough is enough - she got her own Dr to take care of. And Martha has always been a dud with me - she should never be brought back.
I don't mind a few characters coming back but when there are so many it just ends up being a mediocre story that just tries to fit everyone that has ever been on the show.
@FrogPajamas: Agreed. For Donna, they really should have pulled the trigger. Or something. Anything but "let's toss all the actual character development away!"
About that hallway kiss. I remember back in the day reading every possible spoiler for the first X-Files movie, and if memory serves correct, Mulder and Scully do make it to Mulder's bed, and in the middle of their "passion", the bee stings Scully and the movie picks up with the ambulance and yadda, yadda, yadda. I know I'm still sad that never happened in the movie. Might have made season six more exciting instead of bringing in Mimi Rogers as triangle-bait.
Thank you for this Nivair, since the blu-ray came out there's been threads all over the message boards going mental about the Fight the Future kiss. It's like the Holy Grail of shipperdom has finally been unearthed! Spotnitz still hasn't responded to the 7 million emails he's gotten about it on his blog, so I ( and about a million others) are eaagerly awaiting what he's got to say about it.
In the meantime I'm going to watch this scene in all it's milky quality glory until I get my hands on the real deal. For the 234th time.
I think I would have up and died if this actually had happened in the movie. Died. Keeled over and frigging died.
And I cannot wait for word from The Spotnitz either! Hopefully what he will say is, "WE WILL MAKE IT UP TO YOU IN THE 2012 MOVIE, WHICH WILL BE HALF-COLONIZATION, HALF-PORNO." :P

However, giving poor Donna a better ending would be good.
