I remember liking the book, but can't think of what it was. I was reading the Mad Scientist Club, some book about a kid making toothpaste, and the Norby books during the same time frame. A very quick google search did nothing.

But the idea may not be that far fetched. I remember doing some calculations on this and I worked out how much leaf area would be be needed to feed or power a human. The area was remarkably low.
I'll give you some figures to start with so you can work it out for yourself. You'll be amazed:
The average person needs about 100 or so watts every second to stay alive--a little more if they are running or engaged in hard labor. (About a fifth of this is just used to power the brain!)
If we were solar powered like plants, we'd only have to eat to replace raw materials or to supplement photosythesis on cloudy days.

We'd also have to run around naked in the daylight to get any benefit (or buy a truckload of gro-lamps). Now, that might sound fun for a moment...but just _look_ at your neighbors. _ALL_ of them. Including the ones you don't like to talk to. And imagine them buck nekkid. And green.

Kinda creepy hybrid-plant-slugs that look like little leaves and live off the sun. And the fact that they are real.
