I had 48, I built it , lost the instructions immediately, got annoyed at the way they used the dome pieces, and then proceeded to build designs around the domes for the rest of my life. They are currently on the front of a huge spaceship flown by the Emperor.

I have some of the 1978 sets. I bet that if I could find the instructions, I could rebuild them now, 31 years later. I've been waiting for my boys to get old enough to not swallow the little parts before I got my old Lego stash out.

I don't understand all the people that say they still have these build on their selves. I don't think I could ever keep a lego set together for more then a couple days before I took it apart to build something even more awesome.

@lewis1989001: I have the large space shuttle "Discovery" with the Hubble Space Telescope hanging "in orbit" from my ceiling. Almost upside down with bay door open and HST grappled to the arm.

I'd wanted that set for soooo long, but never had the money for it, and then when I did have the money for it, the set was long out of print. A couple of my best friends remembered this and got hold of a used set for my birthday. Besides simply looking cool (I honestly think it's niftier to have that on display rather than a "normal" model), the decals on the sides of the shuttle cover multiple bricks, which makes disassembly and reuse troublesome.

Whatever happened to the Lego Technics sets?

I was given two over successive years - the first was the bulldozer/crane/tractor/whatever you wanted, the second was the big car with the working V8 engine/tractor/multiple space-fighters/whatever I wanted.
Nowadays the Lego sets are so limited because the pieces are so specialist that the poor wee bugger that gets the set can only go so far with his/her imagination.

The majority of the Lego Technics pieces were normal Lego pieces with holes in the sides, axles, lots of different-sized gears, wheels with interchangeable tyres, wee grey linkages that linked each piece in so many ways, the possibility of adding the Lego electric motor at any time/any stage, holes in the 'lego nipples' on the top surface that accepted so many little new stuff...

The creativity of today's children is being slowly eroded by quick-fix, instant gratification.

@tontdoch: eh, a lot of the stuff they use now are the same pieces that they used in the late seventies. I remember buying some sets specifically because they had some new crazy piece I had invented a use for just by looking at it. I dunno which sets you're talking about, but my house was always open to a new crazy thing. That side, WHERE THE HELL ARE THE TECHNIC SETS!? I NEED MORE GEARS!

@Quarter_staf: Since you work for LEGO and design them, I just have to ask, "WTF is up with girlie LEGO sets? They're pink and purple and dolly themed and DUPLO-esque. Why no little space women? Why are the ones marketed to boys cooler?"

@My_Latest_Incarnation: Actually the Galactic Enforcer you see here I gave a female Commander, and in recent years we have tried to bring in more girl heroes to our lines. I do agree our specific female aimed lines need work, and we have a good new team in place for that. But I'm afraid to some extent construction toys just seem to appeal to boys more.
@ just assign me number: sorry I'm taken, but if I ever get cloned I'll send him/me over (with lots of LEGO bricks).

Uh...is it wrong to admit that I still have Legos? As a kid I used to mix the castle themed sets with the space sets. My Lego astronauts were constantly traveling back in time and to planets where the people were still at the Medieval level of development.

@Bill-Lee: If it's wrong then I don't want to be right. I still have a few of mine, mostly the pirate and space sets. I also use to mix the sets as well. At one point I built a space ship modeled after a Viking long ship (pieces from the pirate ship sets).

I got the one in picture 36 for my 7th birthday(my first one too). I was supposed to get the one in picture 37 :(
