I expect I'm among the few commenting here who are old enough to remember the show's initial run, but to me the Rand character always seemed full of potential because she was clearly being set up as Miss Kitty to Kirk's Marshall Dillon. GUNSMOKE was the hottest show on the air and everyone wanted to try to imitate the formula. Grace Lee Whitney could have given Amanda Blake a run for her money.

So your happy with the only female character in the whole movie who doesn't die being reduced to a character who just makes the male characters feel better? That's not what I had in mind when it comes to great female characters.

There was the Andorian female on the bridge (she was hard to see with all the lens flare); the two Vulcan women on the shuttle (they were also hard to spot with all the lens flare); the woman in the bar (lens flare blocked her out); the two female ensigns in Engineering (lost behind some lens flare); and the woman commander at Starfleet Command (lens flare).
