This is hurting me twice over. First, ABC cuts Pushing Daisies, a show I loved. Then they're replacing it with rehashed episodes of Cupid...a show I loved that they also cancelled.

If they cancel Scrubs, I may just remove ABC from my tv channel listings altogether. Too much heartache, too many shattered dreams.

Wait wait wait wait. The new Cupid is based on the 90s Cupid?!? Why did no one tell me this? I LOVED the 90s Cupid! I haven't watched it since then, because generally rewatching the shows I remember fondly from the 90s just results in spoiling my memories [I'm looking at you, Lois & Clark and Not Insignificant Chunks Of The Part Of The X-Files That I Thought I Actually Liked]. But I loooved it at the time.

Damn. Piven might be a douche in real life, but he is very good on TV.

I gotta go with the Pivs, years of douche behavior aside.

He's just better in the role.

I see what they're trying to do here, with the saccharine, but judging by the ratings, it's not working.

I don't think this is going to last any longer (maybe not as long) as the original, and nobody's going to remember it fondly, like they did the original.

Meredith's bias is pretty obvious, but Piven's performance blows Cannavale's out of the water.

So what you're saying is, you don't like Jeremy Piven?

I've never seen either show, but the minor changes to dialog and characterization in the new show do not seem like an improvement. And the new shrink is nowhere near as interesting as the old.

I really liked the original show but I like the new guy's delivery. Piven is a bit more Lust god in these clips than Romance. It might be more accurate mythically, but Canavale plays it right for his show.

Props for finding out that the pilot script was recycled--this was a very interesting feature.

@Alessar: Piven is supposed to be more Lust god. And I don't mean mythically, I mean within the context of the show--the whole reason that Cupid got sent to earth in the first place was because "Lust" was all he knew how to do--that's why his matches kept ending in divorce. The gods sent him to earth exactly so that he would learn what romance is.

And the new guy seems good, he's just too shiny for a down on his luck cupid. Piven as a bit of a grungey guy works.

@tetracycloide: I'm as quick to point out how io9 selectively sticks to its mandate as the next guy, but in the site's defence, this falls squarely into the "urban fantasy" genre in a way that House, M.D. does not.
     Reply
TheAlmanac was starred TheAlmanac was unstarred

@TheAlmanac: nothing ever falls 'squarely' into any genre because the definition of each genre is made up. a 'science fiction' book isn't science fiction because of anything that's inside it, it's science fiction because we, as a group of readers, agree that it is.

so if we would all just agree that house m.d. falls into one of the plethora of genres covered here that fall broadly under 'serial dramas on TV actually worth watching' then there's no technical reason to exclude it.

@Meredith Woerner & Annalee Newitz: did you guys see the part where they hooked mos def up to a machine that translated his thoughts into electronic commands? if you can't include house m.d. for the genre then include it because every single week they solve a medical mystery with an experimental treatment.

and no i'm not going to stop whining about this and i don't need to grow up! *blow raspberries

I like Cannavale. But that's because the new version is shot more like a modern day Romantic-comedy with brighter colors and such. The Piven version is like a dramedy with more emphasis on the drama.
