Q: What are zombie books printed on?
A: Undead trees!
*rimshot*
Oh, is there a cameo by the Grateful Undead?
Despite their lack of elegance, zombies are getting great PR; just when I thought vampires continued to bask in strengthened fame, we can't resist these resurrected.
Zombie literature? I'm going with the theory that some publishers feel that, what the hell print is dead, they should just give up and put out intentionally crappy books.
'Coz it's like ironic an' stuff, get it?
@Grey_Area: Sadly, that may be beyond their capacity to think. I'm pretty sure they're just hoping to cash in quick. Even the agent who sold this says it's a craze that won't last.
@Grey_Area: you've got a good point, print is dying, and the horror genre has been called dead for year. if these companies want to survive them publishers have to print what sells, which is why we now have a manga division at Del Rey, a never-ending surplus of teen-oriented vampire series, and now P&P&Z clones....
As customers, we have to be choosier w/ our dollars. If you don't want to see crappy books, we can't support them. Unfortunately, advertising dollars are spent on writers who are easily mass consumed - no unique voice or insight - McPublishing... As genre fans who read, it's up to us to get the word out about writers and books that are worth a damn. I don't know about you folks, but thought of only being able to read from a Kindle frightens the shit out of me... I like books - their feel, their smell, the krinkly sound of the pages as I turn....
@Allen_Richards: Bibliophiles unit! I love my books. I love collecting them and reading them and looking at them and lending them to friends. I especially love good books. Sometimes I worry that the literary peak of our civilization has already been achieved, and it’s all downhill from here. Stories like this add to that fear.
As for the Kindle, ever since Orwellgate I've considered it only a matter of time until Amazon starts sending out firemen.
@Allen_Richards: My bets are on a book chronicling what would have happened in Stranger in a Strange Land if Valentine Michael Smith had been a zombie.
@Daumier: You want an idea as to the awesomeness potential? Check this out. While not zombies, and more a Sid & Marty Kroft homage than Muppets, it should give folks an idea for the craziness puppets can achieve (actually, as far as I'm concerned, any excuse to plug this is a good one)
I'm not usually a zombie fan (seriously? ew!), but I liked most of Rachel Caine's Weather Warden books; they were fast-paced and usually fun. Her main characters were pretty realistic and likeable (strengths and believable flaws) - with funny inner dialog. She also did a good job with those "good or bad?" characters. I'd give the new series a chance. Thanks for the heads-up!
Interesting. This seems to harken back to the original West Indies zombie legends. The great fear that zombism was rooted in then was the denial of rest. For the slave even in death there was no escape, they would have to serve their cruel and evil masters.
On the flipside, for the masters, it was the terror of being subjected to slavery after years of keeping others in bondage.
@Gann: There's a Alan Moore issue of Swamp Thing in the American Gothic arc that ends with a dead guy finding fulfillment selling movie tickets.
"So here's your box...uh, you get all the free popcorn you want."
"No thanks, this will be fine."
Interface was really a low point in the man's writing. Yech... The only one worse is "The Big U". Shame on Stephenson for dragging that one out after he became famous.
@Grey_Area: For what I read, he didn't disowned it for years... he still has, but had it republished because people were paying hundreds of dollars for it on e-bay, and he preferred people paying a fair price for a novel that sucks (in his opinion) than people paying obscene prices for the same novel.
Makes me wonder what happened to your first edition :D
@BullfightsOnAcid: I agree. CRYPTONOMICON was one of the best books I've ever read. But I was hard pressed to find any SF elements in it. Sure, it stimulated my fannish receptors. But that may have been the Perl source code.
@crashedpc /sarcasm: Historical fictional thriller? Don't get me wrong, I LOVED that book, but it wasn't REALLY scifi. Everything was completely plausible using pretty much any engineering talent.
@crashedpc /sarcasm: Yes, Stephenson hasn't been sold as SF since The Diamond Age. You'll find the entire Baroque Cycle in the mainstream novels category of your local Borders.

Or the occasion request for brains.
I can't see that sound becoming popular, even with an 808 drumbeat,
