Well, they just couldn't keep shooting down our probes anymore. We were going to start getting suspicious. #space

Mission failure seems like a broad category: would funding problems or design problems and delays leading to cancellation add to that number, or were they all catastrophic and explosive failures? #space

All that matters is that NASA gets there first with a manned mission, because everybody knows that if you stick a flag in something its yours. #space

@Harrison_Bergeron: that rational hasn't quite worked for Antarctica, though. Which is, at this point, probably a good thing. :) #space

@Harrison_Bergeron: The question is one of limits, why should planting a flag on a planet give you the whole planet, rather then merely the significant geographical region around the flag. #space

So, the most important lesson learned hear is to never let the Reds send you to the red planet. You'll almost certainly die. The US, on the other hand, has just shy of a 75% success rate. The EU is 100% right now, but with only two missions under their belt it's hard to say how indicitive that is of their overall quality. #space

One would think the Red Planet would have been a perfect fit for the Soviets. Seems Mars didn't like communism either. #space

@ManchuCandidate: It does look like the Soviets wanted Mars since the vast majority of the early missions were theirs. That's also the reason they failed, I think. Later missions had better technology and have learned from early mistakes. #space
