Good. Now we need all filmmakers and potential filmmakers to sign a contract where they promise to stop adapting this book. Including "The Black Hole" it's been adapted something like 19 times. #20000leaguesunderthesea
McG aside, I would love a good 20,000 leagues movie to be made, but for the love of god, if nemo is an Englishman(or any kind of white) I won't even look. There was some crappy TV version made as recently as the late 90s and he was still white, it is very annoying.
If there is one thing that League of Extraordinary Gentlemen did right(and that's a huge "if") it was in not whitewashing Nemo. Seriously, the people that made that movie should be raped by yaks for destroying an awesome comic. #20000leaguesunderthesea
Actually, originally, Nemo was to be Polish, and hints of this can still be found in the first novel. Under this plot, his family was murdered by the Russians during the Polish insurrection in the mid 1800's. One clue to the original intent of Verne is a portrait of Tadeusz Kosciuszko aboard the Nautilus: Kosciuszko was a Polish hero who fought against the Russians. Nemo's collection of literature and art also point towards this more European origin.
Verne's publisher though, fearing an outcry from Russian readers, convinced the author to obscure the true details of Nemo's background and the reason for which he fights.
It was later, when Nemo reappeared in 'The Mysterious Island,' that Verne made him an Indian Prince, as the French were currently sympathetic to the plight of the imperially colonized India.
So technically, a white Nemo would be much more true to '20,000 Leagues,' while an Indian Nemo would belong only in a loyal adaptation of 'Mysterious Island.' #20000leaguesunderthesea
@Alehkhs: Duly noted, but I still stand firmly againt his anglicization. I think a proper Indian protagonist would be awesome, so I'm still in favor of it going that direction.
I have never felt so much horror as to when I read this headline.
20,000 Leagues Under The Sea was the first book I read that made a significant impact on me. It got me into engineering and science (fiction!). Love the book so much... and then to even begin to think that McG might be involved in a movie portraying it...
The same imbecile that brought us Charlie's Angels 2.
Thank you Disney. #20000leaguesunderthesea
@Faustroll: It's likely the same reason Shyamalan still gets to make movies, but I don't know the reason for that either. McG will have a bit more trouble with work since he destroyed Terminator and hopefully Shyamalan gets booted out of Hollywood once The Last Airbender gets raped by him and tanks. #20000leaguesunderthesea
@FartyMcPooPants: I think Uwe Boll should be allowed to make movies since he somehow always manages to convince people to give him money to make a shitty movie, he must be smooth talker to investors. And I did read some months back he did a non-videogame movie and it got decent reviews,at least compared to what he normally makes. He's a C-list director all the way and he knows it, where as McG and Shyamalan think they make awesome movies when in fact they make shit. The Happening was one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life and I would rather watch a shitty Uwe Boll flick than another original piece of crap by Shyamalan. #20000leaguesunderthesea
@Roklimber: Too old and too white. Nemo is a Sikh in his late 30s. Oded Fehr (ardeth Bey from the Mully) would be good but too little-known. Alexander Sidig, from DS9 would be good though. #20000leaguesunderthesea
@ManchuCandidate:
Nemo is Latin for "no one"
and in Greek means "I give what is due" Some think that Verne got this from the Scottish motto "nemo me impune lacassit" or "no one provokes me unpublished"
In the sequel "Mysterious Island" Nemo declares he is Prince Dakkar, son of the Raja of Bundelkund and a descendent of Sultan Fateh Ali Tipu. He hates the British Raj and lost his family in the Sepoy Rebellion. [en.wikipedia.org]#20000leaguesunderthesea
@Faustroll: That's a good point. I only mentioned Connery because he imposes a certain air of authority. The accent might be a problem, though. Skin color is a matter of makeup, so that's not much of a practical issue.
I like your suggestion of ex-Dr Bashir (who, incidentally, played a bond-like character in one of the best episodes of DS9, in my opinion - Our Man Bashir). #20000leaguesunderthesea
@crashedpc - Haifisch: He'll just have to carefully ration the beans & rice until he gets his first "Independence Day II: The Independencing" paycheck. If you're really worried about Will Smith getting to feed his kids, you could go to Blockbuster and rent "I Am Legend" twice. #20000leaguesunderthesea
I wasn't nearly as worried about McG directing as I was about Will Smith starring in it. He is getting really over-exposed, as are other actors, such as Nic Cage.
While the project has been shelved, that doesn't mean it won't be made at some other date.
Let's hope neither Smith, Cage, Justin Long or Shia LeSmurf have any parts in it at all. #20000leaguesunderthesea
