In reply to Marvel: The First Hit Is Free (Or $1, At Most)
I'd love to see the comic publishers keep a $1 series running monthly. Reprint older stories - get current fans into other books & bring in newbies. Anything that gets people back into comic shops regularly is good for the business.

What I really want to know why DC and Marvel aren't jumping on ebooks. They are cheap to distribute and don't really compete against high quality printed material. Similar to those giant collections that just print the line art on cheap paper.

@cjschmidt: Marvel is down like a clown with the ebooks. they have their Digital Comics you can subscribe to. i think the big thing holding all the publishers back from the portable ebook format is the lack of color display (yet)

i'd also love to see affordably priced comics. i stopped buying them when i started moving around a lot, switching to TPBs. now whenever i got into a shop, it always makes me look twice at the cover prices. 5.00 for 18 pages of light dialogue? for the same price i could get a mass market paperback novel. this is their biggest problem that they need to overcome if they want new readers, and save their old ones. i still think the best way out is to go 100% OGN/TPB. that way, a new reader can pick up a whole story and read it rather than sampling the first few pages, waiting a month to get the next few, overpaying all the way, before they are finally let down six months later by a story that goes nowhere. And old readers as well as the new ones would all benefit from the lower prices that publishing in that format brings inherently.

the cost of print comic serialization FAR outweighs it's novelty in today's world and undermines the industries wishes and hopes to someday be taken seriously by the outside world. If they want to be taken seriously as a publisher, than publish like a serious publisher, not a novelty company. They have to decide, are they making magazines, or are they publishing long form fiction?

@Bootknife-Jackson: I just saw the comic reader for PSP was released today. Seems like a much classier option than the "motion comics" that were being released. Hope there is an iPhone release in the near future (and that DC joins in the fun).

My ideal situation is a large cheap color Kindle. I subscribe to my local newspaper, blogs, Green Lantern, Superman, etc and they just show up. If I really enjoy a series I can press a button and the tpb shows up at my door. If I could digitally subscribe to my favorite series for $1 an issue I can guarantee they'd get a lot more of my cash each month than they do now. Imagine the opportunities for indie/self publishers!

We seem to be at a frustrating point where the tech is good enough that most of us know where it's going and are excited about the potential, but the technology is just taking too long to get here.

2 years ago (when I got my Sony Reader) people would talk about "the smell of paper" and brush my gadget off as a novelty. Now, almost everyone I know has accepted the fact that iPhones and Kindles will replace the cheap mass-market paperback eventually. Even my mother has an ereader on her wishlist.

@cjschmidt: yeah i'd definitely like to get one. i think once the Apple Tablet comes out, that'll be a big push in the direction of mass adoption as well (as their track record shows. ipods, iphones, itunes, etc.)

the big hold out is still the color display. and we do have the technology, but i think that it's still more cost effective to target the MMPB market, and really hone that 'like paper' feel in B/W first, before moving to incorporate color, if it's even compatible technology.

maybe a big boon for that push will be to incorporate Manga, and some other B/W works of graphic fiction for the Kindle, etc.

Its a good idea, but at the end of the day, comics are still way over priced considering you get maybe 20 pages with full size images taking up most pages.

@GreyHammer: Comparing comics to paintings is no more equal than comparing comics to novels. Comics are a merger of art and words, and when you can read a comic in 5 minutes, don't get a complete story, and have to pay $3-$4 for it... yeah, they've become way overpriced.

Not to mention that the number of comic artists who have the talent and/or time to match the level of artistry in even a decent painting is very small. (Though of course this is a matter of opinion.)

But if you find modern comics to be a great or even fair value, good! No one's stopping you.

@Communist Pope: Actually, the fact that they take oly 5 minute to read is an advantage rather than a detriment. Why? Because tit means you can re-read them way more often. How often do you re-read a book , compared to how often you re-read a comic?

@Communist Pope: Okay, 5-minutes is exagerated, I usally read those I read in 15 minutes. But I read comics exactly because they are fast to read. I read big, dense novel like everyone, and love them, but sometimes I just want to sit for an hour and read 5 issues of Tony Stark bashing his way trough rank-and-file minions. Or read the continuing adventure of Buffy.

I do agree TPB is a better deal all-in-all. I buy most of my comics in TPB. But I get some monthly just for the fun of getting a small new piece of reading every two weeks.

Not a bad idea, Marvel. I got back into reading comics because of those little flip comics they had a few years back, which had two comics for a little over the price of one. It was Whedon's first issue of Astonishing and the decidedly more mediocre first part of New X-Men as I recall.

@BrendCh06: To be honest, the only things really doing much for me are Matt Fraction's run on Uncanny and Peter David's incredible X-Factor (my favorite comic series currently). The former has easily supplanted post-Whedon Astonishing as the X-book of choice in my opinion. The latter is just all around great storytelling and good fun if you haven't read it yet, definitely one of the most under-rated titles in comics (and not just from Marvel, I'd say the title holds up to the best of any publisher period).

Um, guys..... three words: Dr. Daniel Jackson (SG-1)
How many times did he die to Ascend to the Asgard and be sent back for some reason or other. I think the final count was 5?

The Borg Queen - Killed by Data in Star Trek: The First Contact, only to come back at some point during Star Trek: Voyager and fight Janeway.....several times.

Captain Kirk - Died at the beginning of Star Trek:Generations when part of the starship he was on was ripped off by a strange magnetic wave. This wave is later identified as the Nexus, where he is found by Picard. He's then brought back from the Nexus to die because a bridge falls on him? How lame is that! Little known fact: when Kirk and Picard first stand on the bridge that is later Kirk's doom, Shatner ad-libbed "Captain on the bridge." When said bridge fell on Kirk, Shatner ad-libbed "Bridge on the Captain." Both lines were cut from the movie.

Neo. - "I think you're waiting for something. Another life, perhaps."

Agent Smith - "Were you listening to me just now, or were you looking at that lady in the red dress?"

Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez (Highlander I & II) - Because you simply can't kill Sean Connery
