Not to be a jerk, but what does this have to do with science fiction? I, for one, am well aware of the current economic climate and come here to relish in my favorite genre of escapism. If it were an article about how the economy was affecting big-budget scifi films, TV, or publishing, I wouldn't care - but this just seems pointless and depressing.

Edit: The mass of comments on Obama and bailouts instead of lasers and hoverboards would seem to illustrate my point.

@cjschmidt: I'm gonna take a guess that the rational behind this post was an illustration of the dystopian future we are approaching. Sure it's a socio-economic issue, but it's we haven't read more than one author who's future world is seeming less futuristic.

@cjschmidt: It's a shiny video graphic with possible implications for the future. Ergo, sci-fi research at it's prettiest.

Or, it's scary and sad, ergo, it's horror, which is closely related to sci-fi.

What's worse yet is that the unemployment figures aren't accurate. They only show the number of people currently drawing on unemployment and don't take into account the number of people that couldn't find a job since their unemployment has run out or that have been forced into taking two lower paying jobs and still can't make their bills.

@♠ Final ♠: You forgot those that just gave up looking for work so the percentage out of work is even higher. The number purportedly is around 17% give or take.

@♠ Final ♠: On the other hand, it doesn't account for recipients who shouldn't be receiving unemployment, e.g. people who don't need the $360/week or who are employed & get paid off the books. Lots of relatively wealthy layoffs & service industry workers take unemployment when they don't need it.

@♠ Final ♠: The unemployment rate doesn't count people who are under-employed (part-timers), or minors and students, or "discouraged workers", or those on unpaid leave, or certain family members who work in a family business, or people on furlough, or those in job training.

Depending on the source, the real unemployment rate is probably between 18-20%.

Sucks, but necessary. Too many jobs in sectors dependent upon growth & consumption. Growth & consumption kill the planet, create waste, & manipulate the natural order. The recession has reduced consumption & credit, but has also resulted in greater business efficiencies & personal savings. When the economy improves, what then? More revenues & incomes, but at the expense of the environment, personal health, & both business & personal financial aptitude. Since we're in the information age, hopefully this recession will have lasting, informative effects on future growth cycles. News Flash: Overall, we need less, not more.

@ingenieur: This happened during WW2 too, and all that went out the window by the 60's but maybe we'll have a resurgence of sci-fi like we did post war, as people may start to have hope for the future again.
